When you go through a game solo, does it mean that you never pick up any NPC and don't do any quests that come with them and don't get all the experience points they give? Does killing all enemies by yourself bring more experience than NPCs' quests?

Killing enemies nets you a lot more XP than you'd get from the NPC quests as it's XP you get all for yourself. You don't have to share any of it. Do every quest in SOA that you can find and you'll hit the XP cap long before the end of the game.

You get too much experience when you solo as it is. I'm sure if you did everything you would get close to the exp cap in chapter two alone!

So I don't do any NPC quests or invite them into my party. But I sometimes let Imoen stay for the first bit seeing as she starts off in your party.

But you stil can release Minsc and Jaheira from the cages, and help Viconia and rescue Haer D'alis, and stuff like that? If you don't take them with you afterwards...

It depends how you define solo. True soloing would be never having any of the NPCs accompany you no matter what, but that way you might miss out on quite a few interesting quests. I'd sooner do it whereby you take them along for the minimum amount of time required to do what's needed then boot them out.

Example: you need Cernd to complete the druid grove quest. You don't let him join the party in Trademeet but tell him to meet you at the grove. Once there, you let him join for as long as he's needed to actually complete the quest then boot him out again.

If a quest can be completed without the NPC in your party then you're not really soloing if you have them join you.

Example: you take Valygar with you to open the Planar Sphere even though you can kill him and use his dead body to open it.

But at the end of the day it's up to the individual how they play the game.

Regardless, there is absolutely no comparison in XP you lose from not taking along NPC's as you gain for not having to share. Think of it this way, for everything except quest experience points (which is given to all characters in the party) your PC gets everything instead of dividing it up. Essentially, you're going to get 6 times the amount of experience points as you'd get from having a full party.

Although most of the larger quests will give a set number of XP points to each character regardless of how many npc's are in your party.
