That's what happens when you don't go pr0n. VHS won because the consortium in charge gave their system as "tech demos" to all pr0n studios. The people in charge of HD DVD should have done the same. Blu Ray would've been slaughtered, like BetaMax was.

That's actually an urban legend, it isn't true. The pornographic industry, while highly profitable, is only a mere portion of the whole home movie industry. VHS's victory was partially because consumer could record more television than betamax, and despite beta's better video quality. There was other reason too, but point is porn never decided who won the format war nor will it ever.

 

I would still wait for the official announcement regarding Toshiba. But if they are indeed giving up, then it is game over.

 

Ask and ye shall receive. It be all official-like.

 

Yep, I just read about that when I came to work a moment ago. Good stuff. Hopefully Paramount and Universal will release at least some of their HD-DVD titles on Blu-ray now, since there are some that I would really like to get.

 

Well...Sony finally won a format war. While the BR encryption has already been cracked, I hope that the folks responsible for the crack, and others as well, will be ever watching for another root-kit scheme. Sony was forced to say sorry last time, but in the official reports I read, it doesn't seem like Sony won't try something similar in the future.

As for me, I'm still going to wait for the prices of the players to fall before I jump in.

I also do fondly remember the rootkit scheme. In fact, I too am expecting Sony to try this crap again -- and what's to stop them? Their biggest rival just disappeared.

It is not just Sony... and BD+ is not completely cracked yet.

Blu-ray is developed by the BDA, of which the nine founders are Sony, Matsu****a, Pioneer, Philips, Thomson, LG Electronics, Hitachi, Sharp, and Samsung.

Universal has already announced that they will release on Blu-ray now, I suppose it is just a matter of time when Paramount does the same.

Nope. I have no interest in high def DVDs, be it HD-DVD or BR.

I can point at my brother and laugh, though, because he bought the HD-DVD unit for Xbox 360.

Honestly, in this format war, I was praying HD-DVD would win. I was hoping Sony would get their asses kicked again. Didn't happened, unfortunately. Damn.

 

A little off topic here. My DVD burner just died a couple of weeks ago, so I applied the $40 I would have spent on a new one towards the $190 a Pioneer DVD burner Blu-Ray reader cost. This was just before the official news of the death of HD-DVD. I would have bought an HD-DVD instead if I had seen a reasonable priced combo burner for the PC. I hate buying anything associated with Sony now because of the reasons mentioned above and their other recent actions against consumers. Sony puts all kinds of road block against the PC world being able to play Blu-Ray disks. It took hours of manipulations to find something that mostly works. But the set up is fragile and I think I am facing many more hours of tweaking whenever they change things. The first disk I rented, Beawolf vs Grendel, I could not get to just play from the disk. But, the funny thing is I found a free ripper in a couple of minutes that dumped it to the HD. 21 Gigs worth - ouch. I could then play it by dragging the video file (vob equivalent) directly into Power DVD player. I never did get the WinDVD player that came with the drive to work. The next two disks I rented appears to have the BD+ and I cannot rip. But I finally got Power DVD to play directly from the disk so I can watch them. The quality IS better than a DVD but not by much. According to speculations, the ability to download HDTV content from places like Amazon and NetFlix may make Sony's victory moot anyway.

 

First I Need a tv showing me those pictures. I Have a square TV and sometimes part of the picture gets cut of. When I look at football, the score is gone.

 

I read that less than 10% of US households that have a Blu-ray have a TV capable of using the full resolution - 1080p. That would include me. My projection TV only does 1080i and maybe only 720. I am not completely sure. I think this figure includes all owners of PS3 who may have no interest in playing movies.


Heres a strange twist to the tale. Did Sony kinda bribe Toshiba to kill HD-DVD?

Not a bad deal from Toshiba imho - HD-DVD's been dead for a while in my books and a sweetener to pull the plug on a dead product ain't to shabby.

 

Doubtful. HD-DVD's fate was practically sealed the moment all the major players (Warner, Walmart, etc) decided to support BR. Now it could be that Toshiba quickened the official statement as part of a deal with Sony to get that plant, but I seriously doubt they sabotaged their own product because Sony wanted them to. Continuing support for HD-DVD would have been a bad business decision anyway, as it would have cost them and they would have got almost nothing out if it other than delay ever so slightly BR becoming a standard.

 

Sure there is... cost. Blu-ray is 30 bucks a movie right now, SD DVDs are 10-15 (20 for some director's edition crap).

 

Hmm, the ones I have bought from abroad have usually been in the price range of $15 - $25, depending on the release. It is quite cheap to get them now from Amazon for example, because of the good exchange rate (€:$) :-).
