I was saddened to learn that Gary Gygax, the father of D&D and arguably much of role-playing, has passed away today, March 4th, at the age of 69. His death was first announced here, at the site of a small company he had been frequently working with.

Mr. Gygax had been in poor health since having gone through two strokes in the early 2004, and had been considered in "semi-retirement."

I wish I could say something fitting of the man, but I doubt I ever could.... He was an incredible figure and a man who will sorely be missed by all the people whose lives he touched. Few men have done more than Gary Gygax to change the way we dream - and through all those dreams, perhaps, the way we live.

    Farewell, Dungeon Master.

You know, I've seen some impressive tributes already, but so far this one takes the cake:

Edit: Dark elf cavalier dual-wielding lances from a unicorn? Oh, me... Have we found the great-grandmother build of CharOP?

(CharOp = character optimization or the relevant board at the WotC forums, known for being able to come up with 5 ways to handle a CR 20 enemy with marbles, a bag of flour, and a rusty nail)

Sad news indeed. I guess time comes for us all, but it seldom ceases to be a shock when it comes for someone...

They were right, it does border on the tasteless... but the Red was quite cute.

Aye, sad. I wasn't too fond of D20. Hell, I never actually liked it too much, and I never though too much of Gygax. But let's face it, he was the father of modern roleplaying, there's no denying that. And for that, I too salute him.

He dies a hero to a whole legion of geeks, that's not so sad when you think of it.

The Penny Arcade comic did border on the tasteless, but it was also quite good. Touching in a strange kind of way. The die just under the pun made it kinda obvious, but I suppose it also makes it more palatable when you know straight away what the pun is about.

The OOTS homage was good as well. A bit too much on the sappy side, but still good.

Gygax started a ball rolling that touched the lives of literally millions of people. As one of those people who was not athletic, popular, or otherwise cool as a youth, I am grateful to the pasttime Gygax started that gave me a way to be a part of something. RIP, sir.

MIT students erected a memorial at infamous 'Prank Central' Killian Court; I think the plaque is perfect. :heh:
