    [IMG] Hi all,

I was wondering if someone here might have any idea what I can do.

Inspired by the journal at the Baldurdash site, I've been playing a solo mage, and have just taken him down into the sewers under the temple district to start hunting down the Cult of the Eyeless.

The problem I have is that as soon as I leave the area via the exit in the Northwest, getting me into the Upper Reaches, within about 30 seconds the game crashes.

The screen goes black, there is a "windows exclamation" noise, as if an windows error message had been shown, and then it sort of alt-tabs out to the desktop. There is no error message from Windows, the top left portion of my screen in black (and the size of the black bit is correct for the resolution of the game - i.e. I get a 1024x768 sized black area). BG2 shows as not responding, and I cannot get back into the game.

I've tried disabling 3d, dropping down to a lower resolution, disabling EAX, and dropping my screen resolution down to the same as that of the game, to no avail.

My system is a Win2k machine with SP2 installed, hardware wise I have a GeForce2 Ultra, an SB Live, and an Athlon processor (probably all that's relevant here.)

Has anyone come across this before, have any idea what I can do? All my saves are immediately before this point, and while I can just avoid doing that whole quest, I feel kinda cheated.

Thanks guys, I hope some genius here can help cos I'm kinda stumped.

The latest and only patch, presumably?

    Yeah, I have the patch.

I've also been using the fixpack from Baldurdash, and I've tried both with and without that, makes no difference.

It sucks to be me, I know, I know ;)

Have you tried to disable the buffering? I'm not quite sure if that'll help...
If the problem was in your system or something else like that the game would crash when you start it. Not when you are in the cult of the eyeless. Maybe you should e-mail the support.

No ToB, we don't get it here in the UK for another few weeks.

Disable buffering? What do you mean, exactly?

Weirdly, I have tried installing BG identically on another PC (also Win2k, also SP2, very similar hardware) copying the save across, and I am able to play fine.

If I move around some then copy the save back... it crashes after some 20-30 secs, same as before.

It's only in this one area (so far)... very very strange.

Perhaps a file is corrupted (from the area you enter). Did you try to uninstall the game and install it back?

One reinstall later, and all is well!

I no longer trust my DVD drive, of course....

    Thanks!
