PC Freezes

Does anyone know how to prevent freezes? I had major trouble on the 2nd level of the eye of the serpent. It's the top middle section with trolls, spiders and beetles. Lots of them in HoF and insane mode.

The game would completely freeze in the middle of battles. The only way I could recover was turning my machine off. I had to replay those battles 5 times (in two sets for a total of ten times).

I've encountered similar problems in Dragon's Eye. Now every few minutes the PC freeze and the only way to so is hard restart. Once I even got the error message:

"An assertion failed in chsound.cpp at line number 3169
Programmer says: Direct sound object not released properly."

I tried to turn off the sound and put the graphics on lowest settings but it still freeze. Can anyone help me please? niether patch 1.05 helps and with 1.06 I got also problems (the mouse drags itself on the left side of the screen and won't move anywhere else)

 

I subsequently discovered that it was caused by the use of web spells on trolls. I stopped using webs on them, and the problem went away.

Hi. Thanks for response. You gave me an idea and I tried it.

I wasn't using the web on trolls, but maybe it was some kind of a spell what causes the trouble. And in 3rd level, I discovered, the problem is the cold spel of the Cold Wrights. I found out right now that when they hit me and stroke my characters with that cold feature of their, th PC went very slow, after two more cold hits it freezed again.

So, in the end - again the problem are spells. Do you have any idea how to fix it? I mean I found a way how to kill wrights (one Magic Stone spell from both of my clerics and he's out) but still - when it will happen again with another monster and another spell? There is no way how to make it OK again?

 

You got me. I've asked others in the community about it, and they had similar problems, but no solutions that worked.

I tried all sorts of things - changing resolution, turning graphics and sound hardware acceleration on/off via config, DXdiag, and Windows settings, but to no avail....

One thing that helped sometimes was turning down the performance settings in the config program. But it still happened regularly...

Ultimately, I just stopped using web spells on trolls. Entangle was safe though. Chromatic orbs on trolls also cause freezes.

 

This isn't exactly the same problem, but in moving from the cold wight level to the evil temple level in Dragon's eye (I think that's the second to the third), the game crashed and returned me to the desktop every time I went through the door between levels. Once upon a time I got around it but I can't remember how I did it. Anyone else have that happen, and if so, did you solve it and how?

I ask because that's where I'm stuck in my latest replay of the game.

 

And what are you doing when you're crossing the door? Are you attacking, casting a spell, fighting... or just going? Or have any character some spell on itself? Did you tried patches?

And with my problem: Now I'm in the underground temple-like place, I killed all humanoid priestes, just the snake-like creatures are there. And the boss is using spells, so I have no time to finish it, freezing again. Now I'm thinking about trying to put the gameplay settings to Easy mode, so I'll kill them all quicker and then I'll save the game immediately. Tomorrow I'm gonna play so I'll see... hope it helps and that this occurs just in this map...

 

Doing nothing, just passing through the door. In insane mode (problems before have been in lesser modes). I've tried tweaking settings but that doesn't work.
Let me know if the easy mode works for you. I know I worked around this the last time I played, about a year ago, but I can't remember what I did!

 

Problems

All right, my PC is running very bad and slowly and I blame those bloody freezes and button restarts. So I did't try anything and just uninstalled it, keeping saves hoping when I buy new PC it will go allright.

But if anyone will have the same problem and sole it, please let me know, I would be happy to continue. Do you think I can try IWD 2 without finishing IWD + IWD HOW?

 

I know this is a bit late... I had that same problem revmav. For me, I had to remove the mod I was using (I believe it was the tweek pac). That meant going back to Kuldahar to sell off everything in the Bag of Holding, removing all the components of the tweek pack, and returning to Dragon's Eye.

Just for good measures I believe I also put the video on the lowest resolution -- I don't think I needed to do that though.

 

Did you experience crashes when going through doors or during battles?

I'm curious, because I too had the G3 Tweak Pack installed, and only had crashes during battles. If this is a common problem, then G3 should be made aware of it.

 

Only going through the door on the necromancer level. I uninstalled at that point (damn I miss the ammo belt) and have continued on without Tweaking....

I had slowdowns during battles, but only one crash in the Forgotten Temple during a battle -- but then I only have a party of three and use very few spells during battle.

The tweak also appears to be incompatible with dalekeeper.

 

Yes, it is, but you can use the IE Save Game Editor instead and it worked fine for me.

 

Thanks, T2Bruno, I can't remember if I have that mod installed but I'll look next time I'm on my home PC - I may well have it, had to reinstall every IE game a couple of months ago (which I have to do periodically with my poor old compy) and I can't remember what I put on in addition to the game - bet that's the problem, sure enough.

 

OK, T2Bruno, I finally got around to checking the installation and found I did indeed have the G3 pack installed. I removed the "assorted fixes" part and now the game seems to work OK - at any rate I was able to proceed into the next level without crashing.
Sorry it took me so long to check this out. Life, you know.
