I discovered for the first time today that you can actually legitimately keep Emma's Moonblade and still be a good guy - and subsequently discovered unhappy problems.

I gave the sword to my paladin, who has a Weapon Focus in Large Blades. Now, previously she had been equipping the Scimitar +1 you get from Dereth, and her to hit is +8: Base four, abilities two (14 Str), weapon one, proficiency one.

The Moonblade's weapon description says Attack Bonus +2. With the weapon equipped, however, the paladin has only +6 to hit, as follows: Base four, abilites two. What gives? From my calculations, she should have +9 to hit: Base four, abilities two, weapon two, proficiency one. But nope. It's a measly +6.

Am I missing some sort of obscure rule, or is there indeed a bug?

I have indeed patched to 2.1 and have also used WeiDu's fixpack which doesn't deal with the moonblade anyway.

The Moonblade does not do physical damage -- it is magic based damage so strength bonuses do not apply.

WeiDu has an Ease of Use pack for IWD2, I don't recall a fix pack. In Ease of Use the Moonblade counts as a small blade weapon (and your weapon focus - large blades bonus is also removed). However, the damage has been increased. You hit less often, but harder. It's an excellent weapon for dex based characters who dual wield.

I always thought that the Moonblade was a short sword.

Emma's Moonblade lists "Martial Weapon - Large Sword" as the feat requirement. With Ease of Use, this is changed to "Simple Weapon - Small Blade" which (according to the EoU document) brings this closer to what a Moonblade is for the spell.

I thought this might be the case, but the character screen does show "Ability +2". Perhaps it's due to her Dex (14), but she doesn't have Weapon Finesse. Although if I take into account the lack of both Weapon Proficiency and ability score bonuses, then it should indeed be +6. Problem solved!
