[IMG] I read a lot on the forum: (Very weak at the start, Irenicus Dungeon is hard and later the monk could be boring because he's overpowered)

For solo or 4 member party are they fun to play? Don't you miss the fun to buy some new weapons or found great items in chest?

My Lawful Evil Monk's quite fun: party is Korgan, Viconia, Edwin and Yoshimo (for safe-cracking). This gives a good balance overall, with plenty of places to put those items.

As for soloing, I've never tried it with a non-thief based character; I just like hoarding items too much (hence "The Magpie" - "Ooh! Shiny ones!"), but it's not like a monk needs items, he can just beat stuff to death with his fists.

Only played a monk once and he became very powerfull indeed (are the people on these boards ever wrong ;) ). I liked playing with him, since he's often just click on the bad guy and wait for him to die, no matter who or what the enemy is. But because of the power at higher levels I only played him once, since part of the fun is a challenge.

Way overpowered by the end, especially with mods. Becomes completely magic resistant, levels up quickly, can be boring to solo because there are relatively few goodies that matter.

Soloing a monk was one of my more fun games, though I never had one as my PC with a full party. Had loads of fun with mine though.

And I agree with the others in saying that the monk is almost absurdly powerful by the end of the game. Huge MR, immune to slow and poison, many attacks per round with his fists (don't remember what it tops out at). Good times :D

Thought the basic idea of the monk was silly since AD&D and could never bring myself to play one in BG2. I think the developers of AD&D watched too much "Kung Fu".

A Monk is supposed to be the ultimate melee character after awhile, so I thought it would be perfect for my playing style. But frankly, I got bored with it. I think there were couple problems:

    - I like equipping my characters with better and better stuff – not really a factor with a Monk
    - While a Monk does get significant improvements as it levels up, the improvements are mostly passive, ie. You don’t get to use most of the new powers a monk gets – they’re just “there” (again, my problem with this is odd, given that I don’t like micro-managing characters)

Bottom line – I found my Monk a bit boring, but for the life of me, I don’t know why.

I'm under the impression, that like other warriors (Paladins, Rangers, Fighters), they get kinda boring at the higher levels. But just like the warriors, they're extremely powerful too.

I didn't find the monk solo that easy, or maybe I just suck. I got hit way too much, and I couldn't kill things fast enough at certain times in the game.

I find monks boring as they do not use many items or cast interesting spells. I just stick to theives and mages.

I am sure they are very powerful but I did not enjoy playing as one very much.

I've never tried a monk properly, but i'm just wondering whether using the scarlet ninja-to from Joluv in the copper coronet in your off hand still allows you to use your fists to the full advantage, while still getting the extra attack per round? because putting a scimitar in the game for a monk when his fists may be more powerful seems a bit odd.

Sorry, a monk doesn't seem to be able to wield anything in the off-hand. Plus, you do get a good number of attacks per round anyway :)

One other thing: this may be a bug, but it seems that at lvl 21, instead of getting another speed bonus, the monk is back to standard walking speed. Now, I am playing a modded BG II, so can someone tell me if it is a mod thing or it's that way in the "vanilla" game?

I know I'm probably going to get flamed for this, but after playing a Monk, I must say that in my opinion...they SUCK!

You don't get anything playing a monk, that you would otherwise not get with any other class. In fact, if you know what you are doing, you get EVERYTHING a monk gets, plus more, with any Fighter-ish class.

If and ONLY if you've played a lot of BG2 and just want to play a monk for kicks, then by all means, go ahead.

Otherwise...stay as far away from monks as you would from Beast Masters...actually, farther. Beast Masters are better. :p

I must say that I'm COMPLETELY opposing Farazz in his last statement about monks - since he seems to have gone lost himself, and his manners, on the way ;P

They may be a totally different style of play for you, but most people can handle 'em. And handle them good. They're as far from fighters as one can possibly be, since fighters - as well as other classes too - are in need of items and weapons to be able to complete whatever quests they charge into. Monks have a completely different perspective on life - almost like som wierd religion - which makes them strong, THEIR way. And believe me, altough they may be hard in the beginning - they sure get powerful in the end. They actually don't "suck" - they ****ing rock the world - especially the world of those who can't seem to understand them.

So stick with us hardcore ROLEplayers Klimax - and do not chose class from what some guys or gals say at a forum - chose from what seems to be fun. From what you wan't to play. I can assure you -

    Definetly worth playing monk ;)

EDITED: Noted that my post may seem a bit offendish - no offense intended though.

Don't wanna make you folks pissed of fer nothin' :D

    Yes.

Always better to have a clear reason in mind.

I like them. They level up pretty fast, they have some funky abilities, they're fun to watch when in combat (it looks like one of those really bad Kung Fu movies :D ), and at high levels they are ridiculously overpowered. There's only two things I dislike about them: their weakness at low levels (not really a problem, since you start at level 7), and the human-only limitation (a half-orc monk would kick butt!)

Agree totally on the half-orc thingie...

I've read somewhere that it actually was the Kung-Fu fighting style that inspired Black Isle and bioware to make the monks that way. Nice!

The monk definitely kicks major ass :) IIRC there's even a modification in one of the official patches to limit the monk's abilities because it becomes overpowered? :) could be mistaken though.. but probably not ;)

Hmm...the javascript doesn't seem to be working anymore in IE, so I'm going to have to do this the old fashioned way, with quote marks... :)

@Makini: Mate...what part of "I must say that in my opinion" do you not understand?

Also...when I said Beast Masters are better, I was being sarcastic...if you know what the word means.

    -------------------
"They actually don't "suck" - they ****ing rock the world - especially the world of those who can't seem to understand them."
    -------------------
"since he seems to have gone lost himself, and his manners, on the way"
    -------------------

Dude, if you wanna flame, flame...I'll give you the lighter even ;) but dont make it personal. Saying that you don't mean any offense by that makes no difference. It still manages to offend people...despite your best efforts I'm sure! :p

Whats wrong with the beastmaster? Get him dual wielding to decent clubs and he (or she) is great!

Still I stand my my original comment, that monks are extremely boring to play.
