Can this wizard Slayer/ Thief be beaten

Im comparing this to a wild mage which the majority of the people think is the best class. A wizard slayer dualled to a thief at lvl 15. His equipment using (using UAI obivously) is

Carsomyr 50 mr
Flesh armor 20 mr
Ring of gaax 10 mr
cloak of balduran 25 mr
kaliguns amulet 10 mr
Vhailor's Helm
Gargoyles Boots
Guants of extraordinary specialization
Belt of intertial barrier

another ring of gaax 10mr
plus character 15 mr
bhaal tear 10 mr
machine lum 5 mr

By my count that is 155 mr
Throw in a simple cast of tensers transformation and improved haste and this thing turns into a complete monster

 

So what? That's a tad extreme anyway. A Blade with the same gear would rock as well.

The thing to bear in mind with that "build" is that before getting his (15!) Fighter levels back this character will be a major wimp and before getting UAI this character will be a regular wimp.

Whereas a Blade will rock during the entire game. Even a Wild Mage will have less trouble getting really powerful with a few level ups.

By the way most people believe Kensai/Thief is the most powerful class. It's probable that with the same items equipped the Kensai/Thief will mop the floor with the WS/Thief. For the record, Kensai/Thief is certainly as painful (if not more excruciating) to solo until you get UAI.

So my advice: try one of these classes yourself starting in SoA. No SK, no XP tricks. Let's see how powerful that build really is (kudos if you even get your WS class back and reach Thief level 16).

 

155 MR is indeed tad extreme, you really do not need such high MR anyway.

There are spells which bypass MR, making the major ability of this build pointless. ie:Sunfire, Dragon Breath, or better, Imprisonment! You can not easily build up a defense against Imprisonment, like Berserkers and all mages (even high lvl priests) can do.

Like Caradhras said it would be extremely difficult to make this build, especially if you are soloing, things will get very difficult and you may find yourself stucked in some dungeon or area.

But the combination of equipment is awesome, I will give you that. You can stoneskin, and are immune to nearly all magic minor enemies can throw at you. With good saving throws, and nasty backstab modifier, coupled with (true) grand mastery, you can do a lot of damage, true. Add the spell casting failure, it will only get nastier!

 

Steady, Silverstar. I find it hard to call someone awesome when they don't mention how exactly they manage to get 2 Rings of Gaxx without cheating.

 

Heh, that's a bug. Put your thief next to wear Kangaxx appears, then pause really quickly while his circle is cyan. Pick his pocket - you'll get the ring. Then kill him, and there will be another on his corpse.
Can do the same with the Ring of the Ram.

The stacked bonuses of the every overpowered and broken item in the game still seems awesome, I have to confess that. Blast the powergamer in me, I am still trying to chain him down.

 

Just how do you get the Cloak of Balduran in BG2? Is it in a mod or do you use the 'pause cheat' at the beginning (or code it in for that matter)?

 

Yes, but that lich is female (is there a word like 'lichess?!' ) and is downright scary!

Also, some other mod enables you to trade some items (including Cloak of Balduran) from the Imprisoned Genie in Chetau Irenicus.

 

IIRC, Carsomyr sets your MR to 50%, not adds to it.

BTW, every time I think I can creat an awesome powergamed character, a plain old sorcerer wins every time.

He can just put 3 Lower REsistances into a Sequencer and beat you with spells. If that doesn't work, Time Stop and then a ton more Lower Resistances.

True, but if Carsomyr is equipped first, other MR bonus items can increase the total above 50%.

Yep, Arcane magic > pretty much everything else.

 

If you go for the most powerful then despite the Sorcerer's spell spamming the Wild Mage will eat the Sorcerer for breakfast. Converting all first level spells into any spells he wants... No Sorcerer can adapt that well to any given situation.
Sorcerers are better if you don't want to micromanage and don't want to suffer early on (before reaching higher levels a Wild Mage is always a liability, still it's a funny liability).

 

This won't add in the bonuses from the Hell Trials or Lum's Machine though.

I don't know if I agree here. Is there ever a 100% chance the Wild Mage can convert all 1st level spells into any spell he wants?

Even if there is, the WM may be more powerful in the very end. But the WM will never be able to Shapeshift in SoA. Time Stop > Shapeshift (Mind Flayer) beats anything.

 

Why? What spell are you referring to? If you can get a scroll for that spell in SoA then I don't see why it can't be cast.

Wild surges can be good as well (they are not necessary bad), the higher your level (in comparison to the spell you want to cast with NRD) the less risks you take. At higher levels NRD becomes rather reliable.

 

Shapechange is the spell I'm referring to. And, AFAIK, you can not get it in SoA.

 

I know it's level 9 and all but I thought there was a scroll somewhere. Can anyone confirm?

 

Ribald sells one Shapechange scroll in Chapter 6.

Even if there was no Shapechange scroll in SOA, you could still Shapechange via the Limited Wish spell.

I understand, micromanagement can be a real pain. I can't be bothered with a regular mage in NWN but BG is the exception (especially with Wild Mages who are just too much fun).
