well, I took out the Twisted Rune late last evening (for the 2nd time ever) and this time I remembered to pick up that staff...

Hmm, I had to quit playing soon afterwards, so I did not examine it's properties... I just saw such a long list... perhaps someone can explain me a bit what's with this staff and how to use it...

I recall it had charges of Spell Trap /the exact effect as Spell Trap spell?/ and something like combined Fireball+LBolt? what's that all about... ?

    TIA,

    Staff of the Magi
This type of staff is thoroughly linked of the image of the spellcasting profession, rare though it is. It is among the most powerful tools that a wizard can possess, the culmination of complex enchantment and endless study. This particular example is good in melee, grants Invisibility, and offers protection from Charms and Evil. It can also cast a Spell Trap, launch a Fireball-Lighting Bolt combination, and Dispel Magic. The quintessential mage item.

    STATISTICS
    Armor Class: +2 bonus
    Saving Throws: +2 bonus
    Equipped Abilities:
    Invisibility
    Immunity to Charm
    Protection From Evil

    Fireball-Lightning
Damage: combined lightning and fireball damage
    Range: 150 feet
    Use: Three times a day

    Abilities: Trap Spell
Duration: 8 hours or until 30 spell levels have been trapped
    Use: Once a day

Combat Ability (each hit): Dispel Magic
    THAC0: +1 bonus (strikes as a +5 weapon)
    Damage: 1D6 +1
    Damage type: crushing
    Weight: 4
    Speed Factor: 4
    Proficiency Type: Quarterstaff
    Type: 2-handed
    Requires: 5 Strength
    Usable By
    Mages

The combined Fireball-lightning is pretty self explanatory...it casts fireball and lightning bolt at the same time, at the same target.
For help on the trap spell part, just look at the spell discription for Spell Trap.

As for what to do with it...I would just sell it. It is after all just a +1 staff. :rolling:

Maybe it's only a +1 staff but the Spell Trap ability is rather a powerful one.

Maybe "only" +1 staff, but strikes as a +5 so you can use this against Kan Gaxx or who...

Dispelling the mages protection spells is the most effective way to kill them.

The invisibiliy is always welcome. Not every enemy has true sight spells.

This staff is ideal for a thief/mage, or a figther/thief/mage. But my assasin also used this to hide, when enimes were around (use any item).

This is the best weapon in the whole BG2...or maybe the Celestial Fury...

sounds rather useless indeed... oh well, off to Rybald we go...

on a more serious note LBolt has never been a favourite spell of mine, sure the damage is nice, but it is awfully unreliable...

Jurts, if your comment is a serious one, then you are grossly underestimating what this staff can do for you.

The Spell Trap lasts for 8 hours, so you can activate it at the start of each new day. It will already be in place when combat starts.

Invisibility can be turned on literally at will. It doesn't even involve the pause that is typical in between spells or drinking potions. Simply click onto a second weapon, click back onto the Staff, and poof! You're invisible again.

In combination with the Robe of Vecna, this staff is supremely rocking. With the Robe, most spells can be cast with a Speed Factor of 1 or at most 2. So, make yourself invisible. Get your self into position for a spell. Cast the spell instantly. Pause, click on a second weapon, and then click back onto the staff. Repeat as often as needed. It greatly increases the opportunity to use spells that are otherwise difficult to use, like Cone of Cold.

Granted, Demons and other types of extra-planar creatures can see past the invisibility. They also become more frequent during TOB. Nevertheless, the staff has lasting value all through the game.

    Beren, Jurts was joking

If that's the more serious note, the bit about it being useless is the "less" serious note -- joke.

    Well, I honestly wasn't sure.

I thought it might to tongue-in-cheek. That's why I was careful to add "if you're serious".

On the other hand, if he really was going to hawk it to Rybald, there was no way in good conscience that I could let him do that without sounding an alarm.

Regardless, I do respect Jurts, all the more so in that he agrees with me that Jaheira is the hottest and most loveable NPC in BG2.

Uph..thanks God you were joking, Jurts! When I read your comments I felt like an idiot for the first thing I do when leaving Underdark is to defeat Shangalar and retrieve from him this incredible staff...it's deeply crazy having this staff and not giving it to your party mage!!!
