What monsters you all hate most, why?

    Why haven't anyone mentioned the sword spiders and ettercups in Cloakwood forest? My God, and that area was full of web traps too - aaargh...

    I'm afraid it would have to be the Basilisks for me. Not only did I completely forget they were there (several times) and didn't bring any protection against petrification scrolls, there was no way of going back and getting one.

    I believe one time I summoned a load of those 'Killer Chickens' then had Minsc rush in whilst they were being turned to stone. hehe.

    [​IMG] The monsters I hate the most are the ones I summoned myself with the wand of summoning. I was in a dungeon with a lot of traps everywhere. I decided to summon the monsters and have them move ahead of me to trigger all of the traps while I walked behind. Well, apparently summoned monsters have this awesome ability that enables them to walk over traps without triggering them. Then my PC's came walking afterwards and triggered all of the traps. I got so mad that I stopped playing BG.:mad:

    I'm pretty sure there is a mod somewhere that allows you to do that.

    You could recruit NPCs you don't like to trigger traps (it's a lot of fun actually).

    What is really nice about BG1 is that you still have to run (live to fight another day) when your party is made up of low level characters.

    I lost interest after that. Then Icewind Dale I/II came out shortly after and I ended up playing those games instead. IWD II had 3E rules at the time and I never went back to any of the 2E games since.

    Kobolds, Sirines, and Basilisks are all tough nuts to crack, dear friends...

    One surprisingly annoying enemy is also the hobgoblin archer, that randomly poisons you...

    Doesn't anyone remember the demon from Soultaker Dagger. If you didn't kill all the cultists before killing the demon they would all turn into demons not to mention your party turning into goulls after the battle.

    I played a Solo F/M/T and the Basslik where the best thing for my character thanks to an orge leaving behind Protecting from Petrification. I was able to quickly level up my character and it made the game a lot easier than it should have been.

    The spiders are not a big problem, the traps are... and since they are not considered to be creatures.... :D


    Monsters like basilisks are annoying once, when you get there without pertification-scrolls. The next time you should we wise enough to buy some scrolls or potions before getting there :) Most tough creatures are good to deal with when you know how to deal with them best. So in my opionion the creatures wich are easy to kill but uncountable (xvarts, kobolds, skeletons, gibberling) are way more annoying. But it also depends on your party. I played a thief-only party once and could just move past the xvarts and kobolds unnoticed. WIth that party, I had more problems with creatures that cannot be backstapped with piercing-weapons.

    You know how like in Batman movies everyone likes the villians better than the hero? I love ALL the monsters in BG, but especially Larry, Darryl, and Darryl.

    I strongly dislike those tough skeletons in the maze, just before you reach Sarevok at the end. I allways have trouble with those. And those greater doppelgangers that pop up all over the place before you head into the maze.

    What makes those skeletons so tough is they're ALSO sitting on top of like three really bad traps, so you cant just rush 'em to get away from their arrows. What I did last time is I turned off my characters' AI, and had everyone who had a ranged weapon plinking at them while I send Imoen up to disarm the traps. I think enemies tend to target characters who have hit them, so if they're distracted by the archers, the dont pay attention to the thief. Similar thing works in Davaorn's mine. If you diable the traps, you don't get those pesky BattleHorrors. I would quicksave just ahead of time bytheway:)

    GREATER GHOULS. Crypt Crawlers were bad too, but they didn't rudely wake one up in the middle of the night. When I first played through Durlag's Tower I didn't know Dimension Door would prevent me from saving, so I had an arse of a time getting thorugh. BG was almost like the Battletoads of CRPGs.

    Sirines. Basilisks are basically one-trick ponies, just memorise a Protection from Petrification and keep them focussed on the protected character. Their poison damage only comes in melee, thus is avoidable. Sirines, on the other hand, are harder to protect against and do all their damage at range. A pack of them are easily one of the more difficult challenges in the game, and they make that annoying "hhrrrnnn-hrrn sssrrrrnn" noise. They're also (probably) the reason BG2 practically trips over itself to give you charm protection items.

    Mustard jellies can be annoying too, if you get hit by a whole group of them, and "jellies" are just stupid enemies, to boot. But sirines are still out in front. I bet whoever designed them had just been dumped by his girlfriend, who stole his car and drove off with his best friend, running over his dog, on the day he made those monsters. "I know, I'll make them poisonous like her cooking, and they'll turn your own friends against you! Bwahahaha (sobs) hahaha! And they can whistle like she used to to MTV! (sobs) HA! HA! HA!" (breaks down into sobbing) :shake:

    Agreed sirines are such a pain.

    I remember one of my early attemps at the game in the Nashkel mines, gettin pelted with flame arrows. Not cool :(

    And yes, spiders ARE a big problem. The traps just make them worse! Who can honestly say that they SURVIVED the 2nd area of Cloakwood on their first go??? Sword spiders, ettercaps, Phase spiders, regular giant spiders... Well you get the picture.

    Also, another place where I often get killed is when traveling between Cloakwood Forests or out of the flooded mine and I get ambushed by wyverns and spiders, especially when I forget to rest just before.

    I usually solo my games nowadays, and I never found Sirines particularly difficult because I rarely play classes that do not have some form of ability that can circumvent the danger. That is, I discovered in Neverwinter Nights that Protection from Evil gave immunity to mind-affecting spells and spell-like abilities. Curiously enough, the same feature is present in Baldur's Gate. A Paladin's innate protective abilities, or the ability to cast either Arcane or Divine magic at the most basic level would see me through. I rarely play Druids, Rangers or non-magical classes such as Fighter/Thieves anyway, though. If I did, I can see them being a hassle.

    Basilisks are either very easy or a pain in the arse. Depends what character I'm playing. When I was playing a Dwarven Fighter/Cleric I was buffed up to holy hell and my saving throws were so absurd that I basically couldn't fail. Any mage hybrid allows for an easy casting of Protection from Petrification. I'm playing a Paladin this time, though, so I can't help but feel that basilisks are going to be a MAJOR PAIN. I hate using consumable items to win battles, but I may have to consider stocking up on Potions of Mirrored Eyes.

    Ankhegs, too, are irritating beyond belief. If only because the buggers are so accurate and damaging, and what's worse, they have the audacity to burrow under the ground just as you're about to slash the bastards. They're not as bad when I'm playing a physical class, but when I'm playing casters they get very annoying very quickly. When using characters who have Arcane spells I almost always use Blindness as an extremely effective debilitator for just about anyone. Try it, blind Silke and she can't see you to cast her Lightning Bolts, and strong physical classes such as Battle Horrors, Ogres, and NPC warriors not only suffer penalties to their AC and THAC0, they just can't FIND you at all. Not Ankhegs, though, oh no. Blind them and they just hide underground indefinitely like the irritating fiends they are. Bloody ridiculous.

    Oh, and I detest Magic Resistant monsters throughout the entire BG series when I'm playing casters (pure mages, specialist mages, mage/clerics etc). Particularly Werewolves. And Wolfweres. And a lot of BG2 critters. A LOT of them.

    Wow, learn something new every day. I did not know that ProtEvil would protect against charm spells!

    You're right. when my best fighter gets charmed, I'm in Serious trouble if I dont have a Dispell handy , quick.

    I wanted to say before, but they're in BG2, but the monsters I really Hate the Worst are those octopus face guys! Illithids? Especially when there's like eight all at the same time. What a disaster!
