You should equip your characters with weapons they are proficient with (or if possible specialized etc...). You allocate proficiency points to characters on level up (not for every level), and you can see them in the records page of each character. Scroll the list on the right of the portrait (name, level, etc...). Proficiencies are marked with +. More ++ the better.

Basically you determine which weapon your character will wield, unless if it is a weapon his class cannot become proficient with (but you can't allocate points to such weapons anyway). For example, wizards can't use martial weapons.

The number of + you can get in a weapon depends on the class.
I think that fighters are the only core class that can have +++++ in a weapon, though archer (ranger kit) can achieve it in longbow.
Also, there are different fighting styles (two weapon, two handed, single weapon, sword and shield). Putting proficiency points in these helps perfect your character in the chosen style. This is also done at char creation and some level ups.

Basically, the weapon combo is up to you. Whichever you are comfortable playing with works. As for which is the best option, that would depend on the precise weapons you plan on using, because some weapons in the game are quite potent, and others less so.
(Typical example: If you have a paladin in party, give him ++ in great swords, because you can get Carsomyr +5 in the game.)

Generally, two handed weapons are usually slow, but deal a lot of damage, while smaller ones have less damage, but you can attack faster with them.

My advice would be to give your character the type of weapon you think he should be wearing, based on how you imagine him, and the suitable blade/hammer/axe/spear/bow etc... will come along in the game.

Well, from the build you've got at the moment, you want to use either a longsword, a bastard sword, or an axe, each with a shield. If you want to wield two weapons effectively, you need to put points into two weapon fighting.

    As for whichis best, consider:

Sword and Shield gives you a higher defense due to the shield, but lower damage due to only one one-handed weapon. Many shields grant good resistances and immunities, though. This is a very good tank-type, defensive build, especially with a barbarian's HP.

Two weapon fighting lets you wield two weapons, and with the number of very powerful weapons in this game, especially those that also grant on-hit abilities, this build can rock. You will have a lower defense, though, due to the lack of a shield. This can work well with a barbarian between their high HP and berzerking abilities, but this is a fast damage dealer, not a tank. Boost up the AC with magic armor, helps, cloaks, etc. as much as possible, but this will probably take a good bit of damage anyway.

Two-handed weapon fighting specializes in Great Swords, Spears, Halbreds, Staves, etc. Among these are some of the most powerful single weapons in the game, especially if you are going into TOB. These weapons do a lot of damage, and a number of them grand resistances, immunities, and special on-hit abilities. Additionally, these weapons let you attack from a small range away from your target, so you can be behind a Sword&Shield tank and still get hits in. Of course, you still can't use a shield.

The other thing to consider is what effects points in these styles actually grant you. For example, two weapon fighting doesn't actually give you bonuses to your attack, but rather it decreases the penalties you take for using two weapons. This means that even an expert two weapon fighter will still be a little less accurate than the same build with only one weapon. I believe sword and shield style gives you extra defense bonuses, maybe to-hit, while single weapon style gives you to-hit and damage bonuses. I'm not sure on those, but you can read about it next time you allocate a point.

All in all, my favorite weapon groups are the longsword (there are just so many powerful longswords), the hammer (crom feyr all the way), the katana (celestial katana), and the two-handed sword (carsomyr for paladins, Soul Reaver or Warblade for others). Those are just my personal favorites, though.

Of course, some of what the author of Aegor's link wrote should be taken with the proverbial pinch of salt. While the weapon cover is decent, the author is clearly ignorant of the fact that fighter classes gain an extra half-attack at level 13 (he advised dual-classing at level 12)- either that or doesn't appreciate the advantage of said extra half attack.

Only extra defence against missile attacks.

Single weapon style can also increase the critical threat range from 20 to 19-20.

I'd make sure to add a bludgeoning weapon the next time you get a pip. Enemies crop up from time to time that can only be damaged by bludgeoning so it's best if each of your characters can use at least one bludgeoning weapon. They're nowhere near common enough to suggest that bludgeoning should be your main weapons but try to have at least one pip. I don't recall any enemies that require either slashing or piercing damage, if there are they're so incredibly rare you can ignore planning for them altogether.

There's plenty of good weapons for nearly all weapon types so I wouldn't worry about it too much. As long as you don't want all six people dual wielding katanas or flails you'll be fine. Every character will be proficient in a few weapons so even if someone else gets the best of that type they can always use another.

With regards to weapon styles I'd pick one for your character to follow and stick with that. If you want to dual wield you really should get three pips in the proficiency first. I'm not mad on sword and shield style personally, as most of the more powerful enemies will either be using melee weapons or spells. Shields themselves, however, are very useful for creating a tank to soak up damage and so if you're planning on using one you might as well take the proficiencies. The single/double handed weapon styles provide very useful bonuses if that's what you're using.
