Does anyone here have an interest in this genre? If so can you make some recommendations for me as there seems to be a disappointing lack of it when I look for it in bookstalls.

As an example of a steampunk/clockpunk story is Whitechapel Gods by S.M.Peters

I haven't actually read "The Difference Engine" by William Gibson and <someone else, I forgot his name!> but I have heard that it is an excellent read and basically the genesis of this genre. I enjoyed Gibson's "Neuromancer", so I would hope that the writing in "Difference Engine" would be just as good.

The Difference Engine was quite good. The other author is Bruce Sterling IIRC...

...who has some pretty good cyberpunk books as well...

I'm not sure whether it fits, but China Mieville's Bas Lag stuff (Perdido Street Station, The Scar, Iron Council) might be what you're looking for. Even if his stuff isn't exactly what you're looking for, it is ridiculously good, and is worth your time regardless.

I didn't like The Difference Engine that much. William Gibson and Bruce Sterling are fantastic authors, but this book was kinda ... flat.

Pasquale's Angel by Paul J. McAuley is decent. It's renaisance steampunk (I had been told clockpunk, but the technology was pretty well all steam, IIRC).

I've done extensive searches before for clockpunk books, but haven't found very much. Most places only manage to list about three of them. There's a clockpunk blog called Da Vinci Automata though, which might be worth looking up.

For steampunk there's www.brassgoggles.co.uk - which is fantastic.
