I watched the Pat Metheny Group's "Speaking of Now" live performance on DVD this afternoon. It's just great. The title tracks sound very much like the CD, and as a bonus, Pat plays that oddly tuned baritone acoustic guitar he played on "One Quiet Night" on a few tracks, including "Last Train Home." Just excellent musicianship all around, including Lyle Mays on keyboards, Anotonio Sanchez on drums and Vu on trumpet. Good stuff.

No Wacken for me this year, either.. which sucks.

But ona n entirely different note, I should REALLY get my backside in gear and start sorting through my stuff for an upcming DJ gig. Maybe if I actually agreed on a date with the club, I would get on with getting a setlist done.

    *shakes head*

I admit. i am a perkygoth these days - EBM, anyone?

Right, off the to Roger Waters concert. It starts in 4 hours, but that's how long it takes to get there with it being on the other side of the bloody country.

My old man got me Machine Head's The Blackening. I read a few years ago in a metal magazine that Machine Head created quite a stir by revitalizing thrash metal. I gave The Blackening a few spins, and it's slowly starting to stick in my head... good stuff indeed,

Never really got into Machine Head myself.

Got Warrel Dane's solo cd 'Praises to the War Machine' yesterday, along with 01011001 by Ayreon. Haven't heard the latter often enough to have an opinion yet. I'm also a bit undecided about Dane's work. There are some decent songs and the singing is spot on, but some songs have quite a similar feel to them- like he wrote several in exactly the same frame of mind. Could do with having a few different tempo songs mixed in- primarily faster ones.

I'll post more thoughts when I've listened to Ayreon a couple more times.

Watched Metallica supported by Machine Head yesterday. Big concert, over 60k people. Metallica kicked ass but IMO Machine Head is better now. Esp. when you look on past 2 albums :p

The Blackening is absolutely F'N awesome. It's been aeons since a song sticked in my head the way Now I Lay Thee Down did. I've asked my friend to get me the couple first Machine Head albums, appearantly those are their best stuff.

I am not a big fan of The Blackening, actually. Maybe I need more runthroughs, but it isn't anything special for me. Machine Head is great live though.

Now I Lay Thee Down was an instahook for me. I wasn't too keen about the rest of the album initially, but I gave it a couple of spins, and it's starting to sink in. I'm getting some older Machine Head next week, and I'm looking forward to it - that's some damn good stuff.

Once you listen to Davidian you will forget about Now I Lay Thee Down. That song has so much power, much like Painkiller.

I finally got a chance to listen to the new Testament record properly. You can immediately tell that Andy Sneap mixed it. Crispy and thumping. It really kicks tush. Kind of a cross between Low and The Gathering with a twitch of the first two albums' vibe in there.

He does have a very noticeable sound, doesn't he? Still, a pretty good one.

Listened to more of Ayreon's latest. Not quite as good as The Human Equation (how many albums out there are?), but still a strong release. If anything, I'd say he has perhaps slightly too many singers- we hear a good amount of the main characters, but there are a few singers that really could have done with some more singing time. Simone Simons, for example, is one of my favourite singers but only turns up on one song (still haven't fully worked out the meaning of that song either). On the other hand, Jorn Lande, Floor Jansen, Hansi Kursch and most of the others do very well indeed. Overall, if you can get hold of it for a reasonable price, I would recommend it.

I finally got the other Machine Head albums, but I have yet to listen to 'em, because I got a few CZW DVDs, and I have priorities, so...

There are six Ayreon albums - The Final Experiment, Actual Fantasy, Into the Electric Castle, The Universal Migrator (technically 2 albums), The Human Equation and their newest one. I still haven't heard 01011001 yet, though according to friends it isn't their best. I like Into the Electric Castle or Universal Migrator Part I best myself.

Yeah, but I like Now I Lay Thee Down's vibe, unlike Davidian which I really am not crazy about. Try as I might, this one just doesen't sink in.
