It's probably been at least ten years since I played this game ... but an extreme case of nostalgia has overcome me, and I would like to try out some Mods.

I've installed the game and at first when I go in can create a character and play, but when I go back to the desktop and try to play again, I get a message the game is not installed, which it is ... just won't let me in.

Is there a patch to play it on WinXP, or any advice would help.

    :(

My system is WinXP Home Edition
    Service Pack 3
    Version 5.1 (Build 2600)

Are you getting this message when trying to run the game from the launcher menu? If so just create a shortcut that points directly at BGmain.exe and bypass the launcher.

Normally BG2 works fine with XP but SP3 may have changed things.

If that doesn't work, reinstalling Windows should do the trick. I had problems with my last Windows installation. For some reason, games weren't registered, hence unpatchable and some unplayable online, due to the serial keys not beeing logged.

It's a last resort, kinda of a pain to do, but if there's no other way - that's the way.
