    [IMG] Hi,

I need help with those basterd Cowled Wizards in the planar sphere. I simply can't kill them!! What strategy should I use?

How can you get in the planar sphere? Is that just something you will get to later on in the game or can you go there any time you want?

[IMG] It's quite simple actually. You have to do the Cowled Wizards quest: retrieving a man called Valygar. Ask at the Cowled Wizards. He is/has the key to the planar sphere.

    .
it all depends on what you like, you could let him join your party, open the sphere, then dump him, or you could kill him and use his dead body, or you could just take him to the wizards and lose reputation.. its all about how your playing...

Deal with the Cowled Fools in the same way as you dealt with those cannibalistic Halfling mages. I find Insect Swarm to be very effective against mages...

[IMG] Urgh. You might need a few higher levels. You definitely need the lvl 5 spells Spell Thrust and the lvl 3 spell Breach. Could you tell us your party specifications?

Maybe he means he keeps getting killed. I sure have many times. Bloody Horrid Wilting. Do you have the rod of resurrection yet? Might come in handy.

    In summary, try these:

    1) Spell Thrust and Breach. At least two of each. I have four.

    2) Chaotic Commands on your fighters. They should have potions of regeneration and health potions too.

    3) If the mages have protection from magic weapons use normal weapons to whack them.

    4) Always dispel their protections before you cast offensive spells at them.

    5) Fire elementals!!

    6) Multiple Hastes.

Most of the mages with the exception of Tolgerias are quite easy. They have few hit points. Two salvoes from a Magic Missile could easily kill one of the lower level wenches.

    I hope this helps.

I am in chapter 5 and I never used a spell like spellthrust or spellturning, so you don't need that.
You'll need brach, that's true. Just attack them before one of them starts talking. You will have the advantage and a couple of hits.
Let your mages stand in the dooropening, so that they will be out of that nasty fog, wich kills them outright, or at least will do a hell of damage. Let your fighters attack and let your mages cast breach.
When you have used breach, just kick them!
Good luck! You're gonna need it...

Err, I thought Breach only dispels protection of 5th level and lower? That means spell turning is still active, if I'm not mistaken. Also, get in a few hits first??

Now THAT you do not need to do. The Cowled Wizards are not THAT hard for you to resort to cheap whorish tactics. Just get Breach and Spell Thrust! They will do a world of wonders. :D

Another way is for your fighters to charge right in and for your casters to flank. Maybe you'll lose valuable time, but at least they're no clustered together.

[IMG] Thanks a lot for the help. It turned out to be a piece of cake defeating those wizards. I have myself a stronghold now (YESSSS).

  10. That group of mages in the Female Fighters area of Underdark made those in Planar look like kittens. Death spell, finger of death, 8th level stuff galore. They killed me lots until I used the following tactic.

    1. Step in the door with basic defensive preparation--after all, you know why you are here.

    2. Arrows of Biting on the first mage.

    3. Summon all the critters you can. I summoned two fire elementals (one was a whopper!) some level 1 monsters and a forest babe (Jaheira rules!) and insects.

    4. Hide your party in one of the bedrooms while one person at a time comes out to cast doom or deaf or some other nasty. If you don't, you'll be caught in one of the 3-4 secret word spells they throw at your party.

    5. When the main protective spells (mantle and so forth) go away and your monsters are all spent, come out and mop up using long range weapons. Use pierce magic, breach, and so forth to knock down any protections left.

[IMG] I killed Tolgerias and his little colleague strctly with powergaming tactics used by my dc fighter-mage:

I let him cast treach on the mages (Tolgerias first)and let my party - Minsc, Valygar, Jaheira and Keldorn put them down with ranged weapons (bow, shortbow, crossbow and sling) while he held them down, repeating breach if necessary. Really short fight.

BTA, hte insect plague was my reason for getting J. back into my party. It even works well´against fighters, who tend to panic with them little critters squirming under their armor.

Insect plague is probably my fav druid spell - really nice. Just as good as mages chaos spell - which is different but can be used the same way - knocking out enemy mages and fighters effectively.
