D&D is going to be offerred by our friends at Wizard of the Coast. It is for those of us who want to role play but can't get friends together locally. This to me would make sense as I have a really hard time finding a group to play D&D. Would any one on here consider this to play D&D online?

Definitely would check it out... but it's not active yet as far as I know. And it'll require a subscription, which will be a big turn-off for many...

I have that OpenRPG program that someone mentioned in the 4th edition rumours thread. When we get High Speed, I'll check it out. The Automated Dice roller and mapping tool would be useful even if the character records were stuck in 3.5...

My cousin in Switzerland is also looking into options involving MSN and Photoshop. When we tried that in 3.5, the DM rolled all the dice for the characters though. I advised my Cousin that it might require that the map be updated several times a round...

I'm unsure what the benefit is of this service over all the other already existing virtual tabletops that already have strong communities build around them. Sounds ridiculous to pay for something that has been free for a long time.

An official D&D service has the potential to reach for more people than several small, unlicensed services... they're also building a significant application back-end with 3D models of all the official miniatures, 3D character visualiser, tying the officially released commercial material into it, etc. So if done right, at least for D&D, it could easily become very popular.

I was reading an article that stated D&D published material sales are down and most of the teenager who played D&D back in the late 80's until early 2000's are now mid twenty into their 30's. The goal of D&D tabletop is to bring these individuals back into D&D but without all the cost of the books, etc... It is also a way to get some old D&D groups together without having to meet at a person house, etc...

If the monthly fee is less than $10 I might be interested in checking it out for a year or so.

It might be more than 10, but come with Dragon and Dungeon too.

The price is going to be $14.95 for a monthly subscription. If you sign up for a 6 month subscription the price drops to $12.95 and if you sign up for a year the price is $9.95. The theory of this is that the player and DM's who purchase this will already have the 4.0 rule books to play the game.

I would recommend wizards release the PHB, DMG and MC in one set with one full year of tabletop for free; I would consider buying that set in the $125.

Okay, yes, I can see the advantage for WotC, but I can't see any for the *player* :p

3D models for minis might be cool, but doesn't sound like a worthwhile investment just for that. An actually 3D virtual tabletop space could be potentially cool, but has more limitations than a simple 2D one.

The advantage is a chance to always be able to find people to play with. It comes with Character utilities, Automated Dice roller, Mapping tools and likely other bells and whistles that are official WotC approved.

Heard that one before... when 3e came out. :D

Oh and here's the actual pricing (the above apparently isn't correct):

I know there has been a lot of discussion of our business model and our pricing plan. We’ve been paying attention to those conversations and have decided to tweak a few things. Our current plan is to start charging for subscriptions before we have the client applications ready. That means the initial Insider subscription package will include exactly those parts that are currently in free trial mode: the magazines, the Compendium, and the bonus tools. The price tag for this subscription is as low as $4.95 per month, depending on how many months you are willing to sign up for. Specifically:

    Web-Content Only Subscription Package:
    12 Months = $59.40 ($4.95 per month)
    3 Months = $19.95 ($6.65 per month)
    1 Month = $7.95 ($7.95 per month)

We aren’t ready to discuss our medium or long-term pricing plans, but this is what the short-term looks like.

Looks great, but it would be even better without the monthly fee, is there any alternative that is free?

No. But when you consider that you get a subscription to two magazines that each packed a newsstand price of about $10 a pop, as well as other utilities, I'd say that's a good bargain. When I get back to work and the High speed hooked up, I'll have to look into it...

I guess the current D&D online tools might be compatible...

Yes! Lots of them! Which is why I can't see how this benefits anyone. It's just a virtual tabletop like any other, with the exception that it costs money while the others are free.

But this comes with some utilities that others don't have as well as two online subscriptions as well. If I had a credit card and money, I would go for it for that alone...
