Ok so I was rounding out my Xmas list today and realized that this game and its predecessor existed. I never got around to buying them because I don't exactly have the money to throw around, but it'd be different story if I received them as gifts. So I have two questions.

    1) Story-wise should I play Neverwinter Nights 1 first before considering playing 2? Do they build on each other anything like BG1 and BG2?

    2) I remember reading reviews awhile ago about a Neverwinter Nights game that stated that gameplay for this game was terrible, but when upgraded with the expansion pack the game was immensely better even when playing the non-expansion part of the game? Were they most likely talking about NW1 or NW2? As a follow up, should I make sure to get the expansion packs along with the vanilla game to start with?

I didn't enjoy the whole NWN franchise as much
    as, say, BG II.
Moreover, NWN the original looks quite dated nowadays, being a 3D game,
whereas old Infinity games still look good due do maps drawn by artists.

But storywise the last expansion of NWN is ok as is to some degree the first.
    The original is gruesome :p.

NWN2 is better imho, and you needn't play NWN to enjoy it.

So if you have to choose, take NWN2 + expansions.

(NWN2 + Mask of the Betrayer should be pretty cheap, at least in my country it is around 20 EUR).

You can start with NWN 2, there's no story connection between the two games except for the fact that they take place in the same city/region.

Ok good. I'm not looking for the next BG2. If I did, I'd find few games that didn't disappoint me. I think I will put Neverwinter Nights 2 Gold, which I believe is vanilla plus the Mask expansion pack.

You know what, I think I'll add this gem to my list as well.
