He can float because this is a fantasy game. He was obtained by a previous incarnation from the pillar of skulls found in Baator -- being Baatorian he has some special abilities....

The Head of Vecna is an old story from early D&D:

[IMG] Morte says he is a mimir, though if he really is, he's certainly not your conventional type of mimir. Like with most things in Torment, Morte doesn't strictly adhere to the source material either.

    However....

You can ask Falls-From Grace about Morte and she will tell you about his Baatorian smell. You will get the opportunity to confront Morte about this; he will then admit he is not a mimir (and get a great upgrade).

    Spoiler on Morte's identity:

Morte isn't a mimir, dear friends. A mimir is a magical construct; Morte admits he was once a living being who caused the Nameless One to croak. He's a skull, the form of a mimir, because he's an exile from the Pillar of Skulls, and admits that he lost all his mimir-like knowledge after he was plucked off of it.

Also, Vecna is the name of an ancient lich who was a very powerful figure in the 2E Ravenloft campaign setting. The Eye of Vecna originally appeared in Torment and is enabled with Platter's fixpack.

By referring to himself as "the Head of Vecna," Morte is just making a funny wisecrack, implying that he, himself, is Vecna (or would Vecna's head be someone else? Impossible!), which he obviously isn't.

Minstrel, did you even read my posts? The Head of Vecna was an oddball plan from a group of players to kill off another group of players (and it worked) -- Morte is implying he was one of the idiots that fell for the ruse.

Vecna has roots in the very beginnings of D&D -- he is mentioned in Eldritch Wizardry (1976) and was a part of AD&D (through the hand and eye of Vecna). Someone finally revived him in 2nd edition and gave him diety status in 3rd edition.
