Which book are you reading currently? #7

Finished Mainspring and Escapement by Jay Lake--interesting steampunk/clockwork universe idea, and it seems the books are the first two of a trilogy. However, there's no continuity of main character from first book to second, though several supporting characters are common to both. Has anyone else picked these up?

Currently working on a collection of short fiction gathered from Orson Scott Card's Intergalactic Medicine Show e-zine.

 

Timtor, I read Mainspring and quite liked it. I'll get around to the second book sometime this year.

 

Finished Dragons of a Lost Star. The pacing is faster than the first book and I have to admit that, although I was expecting the big reveal at the end, there was a twist in the details that took me completely by surprise. I was also reminded that Weis & Hickman are not afraid to kill off main characters - and not always in a nice way. The body count in this series seems to be even higher than usual.

I believe his third book, Green, will be coming out in June, and the main character will be different as well...

 

I'm looking forward to Green, though I'll probably wait until the MMPB is released.

 

Finished Dragons of a Vanished Moon (that was quick). The ending of the trilogy was... interesting and, I have to admit, very different from what I was expecting. Good fun overall.

 

Am still on Wolf Totem but I've also started The Travels of Marco Polo as well.

 

Reading "Ciaphas Cain" a Warhammer 40k book. My first foray into Warhammer and I had low expectations as franchise literature are usually not very great but I couldnt resist the big tome in the library. I am not disapointed, I must say that I am liking it a lot so far.

 

Ebberon: Dragon below serie. Not bad, but still it follows the well known D&D path that most series do. No surprises yet but good reading fodder.

 

Go find a copy of Inquisition War. It's actually pretty damned good. But that's because the writer is, like, a proper novelist.

The Last Chancers is fun.

Gaunt's Ghosts is...if not quite hackery, extremely repetitive and formulaic.

 

I have gotten curious about the "Horus Heresy" which seems to be vital reading from the Warhammer 40k universe. Is it any good? The setting is pretty interesting and it would be nice if further forays would be worthwhile.

 

Dunno, never tried any of 'em.

 

The first one from the Horus Heresy is really good but the second one is pretty awful, I stopped reading it after a while so I never made it onto the third one.

I'm still reading the first Gaunt's Ghost Omnibus and Kevin Smith's "My Boring Ass Life".

 

So I just spent four hours reading Greg Rucka's Walking Dead. I need to be at work in three hours. And I don't regret a minute of it.

Rucka: really damned good.

 

Recently finished reading the two Andrzej Sapkowski books that have been translated into English so far. Both mighty fine and I'm looking forward to more being available here.

I've also almost finished reading King Rat by China Miéville. He seems to be good if you like fantasy subverted in a real world context a la Gaiman. I've got the first of his straight up fantasy books to read when I'm done with King Rat - should be interesting as he seems keen to move the genre away from Tolkien, going with a bizarre steampunk setting instead.

I just finished The White Tiger by... I forget who, but it won an award. Finished it in one sitting too, really engaging stuff.

 

To my surprise, the old man and the sea dropped on my doormat today. I forgot I ordered it. After 1.5 hours I am now at page 67, which is about 2/3.

 

Recently read Murder of Angels and Daughter of Hounds, both by Caitlin R Kiernan. She does Lovecraftian storytelling better than Lovecraft ever did.

Now I'm about fifteen pages into Warren Ellis' Crooked Little Vein, and it is simply the greatest novel of all time. Behold, pure bliss in textual form:

Every page is like that. Hell, every paragraph. It's awesome.

 

Chronicles of Narnia, for the 1st time. Don't know why i never read it, always wanted to.

 

Nothing. I haven't been interested by anything recently... waiting for Robin Hobb to put out some new work I guess.
