[IMG] I think the toughest fights are in the beginning- a fight against weak enemies for your life.
1.Tarnesh- My worst experience-Don't let him cast Mirror Image, Be protected against fear, and Run for your life, when he casts off his second magic missile.
( I used the houses around, and he didn't follow me)
I think this is an interesting topic, because there are many types of bhounters, and other lesser monster fighting strategies...
I had to reload many times, and I'm sure I'm not the only one..

Is he the one outside the friendly arm?

My stratagy is to wait until there are loads of guards around, then talk to him, then run like hell, theres a good chance that the guards will kill him for you, but you don't get any experience for doing it that way.

[IMG] I found Tarnesh so hard that I ended up completely giving up and uninstalling the game twice! That was, of course, before I discovered the idea of 'tactics' as opposed to 'charging in blindly with the biggest weapon to hand'. Imoen has an Oil of Speed when you first get her, so I used that to good effect. I was on him before he could get his mirror images up. The only other monsters that gave me grief early on in the game were the Ogre Beserkers and Hobgoblin Elites on one of the maps on the way to the Gnoll Fortress. I was actually pretty scared of how easily they systematically turned each of my party members into human/elf chutney...

[IMG] Let the guarts beat him up and then join the fight, you get XP then :). And Xan had one usefull spell against him, to start with.. and with Viconia in your party (Next to Imy Xan and Montaron) The fight is pretty fair... So get Vicky first, the gather some guarts and beat the crap out of him all togheter! But like, let Xan wine in a corner, he is to friggin'weak for this fight. and you can Imy have a bow, and let her guart him, and fire arrows from a distance :)!

For a long time, I didn't wait to talk to him, I just attacked him when he walked up to me. Of course, I soon got bored of this cowardly tactic and decided to attack him normally. I would have Imoen and Montaron hiding in shadows, and Xzar ready to cast "Larloch's Minor Drain" at Tarnesh. As soon as he talked to me and became an enemy, Xzar cast his spell, Imoen and Monty would backstab and my main character would fight for all he was worth. Of course, if you decide to get Ajantis before talking to Tarnesh, he'll be a lot easier.

For Tarnesh i always had anyone able to hide and then back stab do that, while other people in the party shot arrows at him to disrupt spell casting and get rid of mirror images if he managed to get the spell cast. As for the wolves and other nasties, equip everyone with missile weapons and shoot at them as they close in on your party.

    Well here's an idea
get your group together, and go met mtarnesh, now when tarnesh is roughly 2 characters away from your party, pause the game and get ready your battle sequence, i.e. get your mage to cast magic missile on tarnesh etc.

SO when you unpoause it, tarnesh will still have time to initiate dialogue but when he exits dialougue, you hit him as he tries to cast mirror image ...

My tactic was: I knew I would leave Xzar and montaron out of the party(because of K&J)
and I left 'em to be killed...poor ones.
I was hiding in a house far away of the battle..

[IMG] I found this one difficult too.

The best tactic I came up with was to run past him up the stairs and into the Inn. Then, get Khalid and Jaihera and exit the Inn and finish him off.

Tarnesh isn't hard to kill with the right tactics however without xzar and montaron, so with 2 characters only it is pretty ahrd. ... Else you can disrupt him with ranged attacks (Montaron, Xzar, Imoen) en slay him with your front fighter. When it is really hard, you can also use the Wand of Missiles Imoen has, however you'd better sell that one.

I think the fight with the Ogre with the 2 girdles is a lot harder.

I didn't find the Ogre very hard... he almost splatted Xzar when he used Burning Hands on him, but apart from that I got out relatively unscathed.

Did anyone else find the Xvart Village the most annoying early part of the game? Quite fun at first, but it soon got very, very tedious...

Headbanger it is also possible to get Kaigen and Ajantis to join you and then fight Tarnesh without Montaron and Xzar ... Kaigen was one solid fighter! a potential of 15 hp per level up!

[IMG] I never use Montaron and Xzar in my games, and I usually go strainght to the Friendly Arm, maybe picking up Ajantis on the way.

Recently starting a new game in this fashion, I was once more suprised by Tarnish. I ended up using the guards, and stupidly let him get a few spells out on Imoen, killing her, and then ran in with my warrior and whooped him. The money to ressurect Imoen didnt come along for a while...

[IMG] Kaigen (Doesn't ring a bell, or is this that dwarf?) and Ajantis ? I did never found them, You can find them before you go to the friendly arm in????

I thought you could only have Viconia Imoen Xzar and Montaron on this point...

So tell me more, maybe I have to replay it...

I have played the game 13 times now and i ALWAYS have problems with Tarnesh and the belt ogre too.

For Tarnesh i simply equip my main character and Imoen with bows and use the oil of speed for Imoen and equip both units with healing potions. giev the wand of missilesyou get from Imoen with your main character. He won't last long enough to cast mirror image...

For the Ogre the best thing is to get Jaheira. When you get her in your party she should have one entangle spell memorised.
When you get to the area with the Ogre, go to the edge of where you know he is going to be and cast the spell as near to where he would be as possible. If the spell works then just equip everyone with missile weapons and pound him... don't forget to point and giggle evilly.
If the spell is resisted then the best tactic is to choose one character and give them the best armour. Get them to attack the ogre and then leg it, making sure the stupid beast follows while the other three characters pummel it with arrows and bullets.

When Sniper suggests Kagain and Ajantis he is being silly. Kagain is in a house on the very west of Beregost and ajantis is on the bottom road on the nasty Ankeg map directly above the Friendly Arm Inn. (You know your on the right map cos it asks you to insert disc 4) Ajantis is useful to get early on and so is Kagain if you are of evil persuasion....but i really think getting them just to beat Tarnesh is a little weak..... ;) :D

When I fought Tarnesh I used a miserable little cheat. I ran away when I saw him coming, so that he was at the bottom of the steps surrounded by guards when he started talking.

I always found the bounty hunters to be a bit tougher myself. I seem to remember spending a long time avoiding the Red Sheaf (because of that dwarf) and the Nashkel Inn (because of that cleric woman). Greywolf, I am still unable to beat without cheese (run around while the rest of us shoot him!) and don't get me started on those Amazons....

Okay, I think that's enough for tarnesh :)
And what about the girl in the Nashkel inn who uses rigid thinking( I think she is Neira) ?
    She is quite tough either...
    And the zeela-lamalha-maniera-telka four?
(outside the mines in the desert)
They use potions and spells, and I got killed quite easily many times .... :)

To deal with Greywolf, use a tactic which i use on many of the bounty hunters at the begginning. First off send your best fighter to talk to Prism. Leave the rest of your party right of the cliff all armed with missile weapons and a druid with lots of entangle spells or a cleric with hold spells.
Give all your healing potions to your chosen fighter incase the entangle's don't work. the rest, i hope you can work out for yourself......
Remember that this guy is only tough if he hits you!

For the bird in the Nashkell Tavern, the only thing that makes her tough is her spells, use magic missiles, arrows and throwing daggers to make sure she is disrupted constantly. The most effective way to disrupt a spell caster is to switch off the AI and stagger the intervals at which each of your characters fires/throws/casts. this way the enemy is hit in quick succession, meaning if one missile misses it does not have so much of an effect.

For the group on the way out of the mines, you need to use fire arrows which you picked up from the kobolds and get your best bowman to use them (hopefuly you did not waste them on that weakling Mulahay!).
Because thios group is hostile immediatly it is not cheating to cast as many entangle and hold spells as poss from just out of view, this way you tackle the ladies one at a time. use missle weapons once more and make sure that when you reveal the map enough to see them you have your toughest fighter in the front. (Kagain is great for this)
The girl you must kill first is most definatley the dart throwing b*tch, she almost always hits and the poisin is more potent than most.....

Baldur's Gate is a game of low levels. All the save spells work wonders, the four girls everyone are talking about are easily taken out by one backstab and a charm person. Hold person and command are really useful. (Especially hold person, with that neat area effect.)
