If you guys could help me figure out which game I'm talking about...

I remember playing it in arcades when I was in junior high and high school (10-15 years ago). It was a side-scrolling platformer, set in a D&D-type world. You fought enemies and released people from cages. Some were regular people, who thanked you for their release, but many were various character archetypes - brutish Barbarian and a wizard of some kind I remember for sure, I think a Ninja, too - who once released would follow you as your backup. You could only keep one of these henchmen at a time. I think there were something like 8 or 10 different henchmen you could free and recruit. Most of the henchmen had some kind of missile attack (I believe the Barbarian through a returning axe, the ninja threw stars, etc.), but each had a unique strength that was better against certain enemies or fit better with different play styles. I don't believe it was released for any early platforms, but back then I only cared about Nintendo - so it wouldn't surprise me if this became a Sega or Neo-Geo title. I just remember that I only saw and played it twice but remembered loving it and hoping I'd see it again some day.

Does this sound familiar to anyone? Been driving me nuts for a week now.

    Thanks a pantload.

You, my friend, are talking about Magic Sword, developed by Capcom.

The game was also released for the Super Nintendo, but I don't know how the port stacks up to the original arcade game.

And just in case we're not on the same page, I offer this link to show what game I'm talking about:

Of course, the one thing I remember about this game was that it was hard as hell; especially the bosses.

There were actually two arcade D&D games made. I don't know all the details about the two games but they both were great at taking my money.
