Will I be able to go and get Imoen in chap 3 and THEN solve all the sub/sidequests? Or can I only take the sidequests in chap 2?

Yes. You can do only what is necessary to get the gold to get Imoen, then return to Amn. The quests will be waiting for you. The ones involving the graveyard district may be hard if you've left them until your return in chapter 6 (and you have a romance).

    Ah yes, the moneyproblem :D

Besides getting Imoen back, is it then recommendable to go for chap 3 first, or will it be more fun with the sidequests first? I'm thinking of going for Imoen first, but I need some comments on this matter.

Well I have always done every single quest before getting Immy so my aim was staright after Spellhold. This time however I may skip some and get her, for a change and fun! I love it when games offer you such freedom.

Ofcourse, you can go immediately to Spellhold when you are level 10 or so, but it will be my funeral as I have Improved As(s)ylum which is soo very hard! And fun!

If you're going to keep Imoen in the party, I'd say go get her as soon as you can. I wait until I have the NPCs I'm keeping, the Flail of the Ages, Celestial Fury and the gold for payment. There were a few fights where I was glad to have a +3 (or better) weapon. You can always just save up the money and go get her when you have enough cash.

I like having my party NPCs at fairly equal levels and putting their weapon profs/thieving skills/spell choices where I think is most useful. You'll have to do a couple quests first in order to get the money. I found either helping Nalia (hint - keep her in the party until you clear her home) with her problem or working for the Shadow thieves very good for getting that 20K of gold quickly.

    Thank you!

I will try to recapture Immy when I get my first +3 weapons and reach approx. lev. 14, then afterwards I could allways go for the rest of the subplots.

The idea of having Imoen by my side appeals the family side of me :p

I went after Imoen after not leaving the city (well, I went to Umar Hills, rescued Mazzy and then left because I wanted to use her) and left a lot of major quests (I only did the Slavers Quest and Unseeing Eye).

I was playing with Tactics and while I was a lot lower of a level, still didn't really have a problem with any parts. Sahaguin City was never really a big problem for some reason so you don't really need +3. Granted I did not have Improved Asylum installed (so avoided Pit Fiends) as I hate it but you can do it. I have not seen any Imoen dialog for those quests though so there is no real reason for waiting other than to keep Imoen closer in Exp.

There's one specific fight (a side quest) that you do need a +3 weapon to hit the baddy.

Also, the fights get progressively harder depending on your party level. I can make it with a mostly level 9 party and end up 14 by the time I leave.

I'd also buy the girdle of hill giant strength and the quarterstaff +4 from Ribald before leaving.
