Having played the game with a tough party several times I'm interested to know which were the most useful and flexible support chars for your party in your games. Have you relied on NPCs or have you created your own chars (and why) ? What class offered the best flexibility or the most useful abilitries and skills?

I was pretty amazed by what a skald or an illusionist-thief can contribute to a party, or an avenger druid for example. Your opinions and impressions please ... :)

I'd say best support for me comes from clerics and druids. With spells like Strength of One, Defensive Harmony, Protection from Evil (Radius), and Chant they can boost the whole party and prepare them for some serious smackdown.

Obviously, their healing abilities are great support. Great summoners too. Offensive minded as well, from Hold Person to False Dawn, Entangle to Insect Plague, clerics and druids "layeth the smack down" ;).

[IMG] Yes the only support I use is from spellcasting and thief abilities.

Jan Jansen and Aerie suits me fine. Jan has an active Thief class so I can mold him like I want :)

Good topic. I think that Jaheira is my favorite support NPC. Her spell selection makes her a good healer, summoner, and defensive caster, and she can even throw a few offensive spells in a pinch. Plus, she can step up and fill in if one of my front-line fighters needs to fall back, and she's even a good ranged fighter (not only one of the best slingers, but she can also throw daggers, unlike other clerical types).

As far as support classes go, I think clerics, druids, bards, and thieves are the obvious choices. While their weapon selection is poor, I like the multi-class cleric-thief as a utility character.

I used Jaheira and Aerie as key support characters. As noted above, Jaheira brings a lot to the table. I like to use her as a "Mage Guard" when not casting.

I must say that I like Jaheira too, she is very versatile and can do pretty much anything except thieving. Good ole Jan is also pearl, best thief in the game and a good secondary mage.

I must agree with joacqin on the usefullness of Jan. I also found Anomen useful for good combat and his priest spells.

Haer'Dalis was one of the best supporting characters I've ever used. He could be relied upon to lend some weight to either a melee or magical assault and by the end of the game becomes a hardy warrior in his own right. Im also finding Cernd to be very useful in my latest game; he gets tonnes of handy spells, especially when it comes to summoning, and when he runs out he can shapeshift for some extra lupine fun. Other favourites are the apparently popular Jaheira and Aerie. I've never taken Jan all the way through the game before; I think I'll have to give the verbose fella a go sometime.
