    Hello, everybody.
Not counting the weapons the console can give you, but only those you can actually go and get in SoA, which do you think is the best?

I like the Daystar, and the Flail of Ages.

The best are The Holy Avenger, the Flail of the Ages, and Celestial Fuery. I think you mensioned something about being an Undead Hunter in one of you posts so you probably have used the Holy Avenger before. Right?

And don't forget about the incredible Crom Fayer! 25 strength, kill all stone golems instantly... Not a bad thing!

Oh ya. I forgot about that. Also the halberds Wave, Dragonsbane and Dragons Beath are good.

Black Razor, the dancing sword ( I forgot its name), the staff of the woodlands, Belm, and the short sword of backstabbing are good too.

The Holy Avenger you get from killing Firkraag, right? No, I never got that one. Considering all the dragons I had to kill later in ToB it seems silly now but I passed on killing Firkraag. The blackrazor looked very cool indeed, but I'm good, so I gave it to the genie. I gave the Dragon's Breath to Minsc. ToB has amazing good stuff, too.

    Hi,

IMHO I think the best weapon has to be the hammer crom faeyr. Speed factor 1, damage 2d4+3, thaco +5, grants 25 strength, can kill stone and clay golems, ettins and trolls with one blow.

Result: damage range 19-25. If you hit you do at least 19 points. (edit: rereading this, forget the "if you hit". THACO will be +12 minimum with the strength and weapon bonus combined. If you have a decent lvl and native THACO on most enemies you will only miss on a roll of 1.

I have Minsc using it at the moment. He hit a vampire yesterday (his racial enemy) for 52 points of damage on a critical hit.

I hate to think what it could do in the hands of a high level kensai.

To be honest its a little overpowered.....

Still its my first time through so I am happy to let Minsc hammer away with it, maybe I'll give it to Aerie.... its nearly as big as her.

The other weapon I would mention is staff of magi, the veritable swiss army knife for mages, again hits as a +5 weapon plus all of those other abilities.
I am guessing that Crom, Staff of Magi and Holy Avenger are the only +5 weapons in SOA? I don't think I have found many others.

Just remembered the +5 sling and the demon +5 mace from the merchant in the coronet.

    Cheers,

    WittyNewt

How about the Silver Blade? That chance of killing instantly sure comes in handy. Sort of makes some battle a bit dull.. I killed the shadow dragon on my second or third attack, just coz of that silly blade.

[IMG] This thread is weird since its title seems to include the assumption that you need to cheat to get good weapons. That is of course major crap !

Anyway, Flail of the Ages and Namarra, followed by C'Fury and Jhor the bleeder

You're right, Ragusa -- I didn't mean to imply that. My son always plays with the killsw01, however, so "good weapon" is a relative term.

    Hi,

Just wondering why all the votes for Namarra?

Am I missing something about this sword?

It appears to be standard +2 sword that can cast silence three times a day. If you have a mage or cleric why take this instead of one of the other great weapons?

Of course, if you are soloing a with non magic using character then I could see it might be useful.

When I have used the silence spell, I normally find a greater malison is needed beforehand to make it stick. Is the silence spell from the sword with no save?

Anyway, each to their own, just wondering whether I am missing some whizzo tactic.

Another weapon I would vote for is the impaler spear. jaheria leveled up this afternoon so I gave her another point in spear and dug it out of the bag of holding where it had been gathering dust since chapter 4.

It is surprising good, does a minimum of 14 points basic and is quick too.

    Cheers,

    WittyNewt

The nice thing about Namarra is that, while just giving +2 on THACO, it deals out 1d8+*4* damage, making it about one of the most powerful blades in SoA. Add the triple silence per day and you can get why Namarra is considered to be *so* good.

    Hi,

Ahhh, I missed the +4 damage. You are right, one extra point of damage compared to blade of roses.
So it does 5-12 at +2 and blade of roses does 5-11 at +3, and you get Namarra for free and both are available at straight out of the first dungeon. Namarra is one point slower than blade of roses however.

Certainly makes it one of the most powerful long swords available in damage terms.

If is wasn't for the silence thing my preference would be to take the extra THACO point on the rose blade, always better to hit more often and deal slightly less.

However, I have been thinking about the silence ability, if my mage is going to toss a greater malison in anyway to set up the enemy for another spell, why not follow it up with a silence from the sword.

I am guessing that the ability is selectable from the use item button as long as the sword is in a quick weapon slot right? it doesn't have to be equipped?

Thanks for the tip, I think my elven fighter thief will give it a try with Kundane.

Now off to pester that packhorse Minsc to find out where he put it.

    Cheers,

    WittyNewt.

I found it to actually to be a big illusion that you need many weapons better than +2 to beat the game. There are just a few enemies that cannot be hurt with +2. Just take flamethounge, giving no THACO bonus at all, it deals out +4 damage on undead - so it can hurt liches easily. Another good weapon was Jhor the bleeder, a +1 bastard sword or the +2 shortswords, Kundane's and Arabane's swords. Finally I think that the weapons with good THACO boni are way more important for non-fighter classes than for the fighters.

Another very underestimated weapon class are daggers: No other weapon class has that many different "special effects" like different poisons, sleep and hold. Despite the relatively low damage I used daggers with notably good effect on my evil halfling assassin (kinda fits the role).

btw - Can anybody here tell me where to find the vampiric dagger +4 ? Please avoid too many spoilers - I intend to play BG-2 the evil way for the first time soon, so if it has anything to do with joining the vampires, please don't be *too* exact, I'd be completely happy with a general direction ;)
