[IMG] Usually I have to roll approx 12 times to get a satisfying result in the near 80s - needs some patience. But it´s worth to wait for sometimes good stats are really helpful

    Mine was 89.
But I heard a guy at the Baldurs Gate tavern saying that he roled more than 100, 105 I think he said.

[IMG] My best roll was 106 points in BG1 (pre-patch)

After the patch, I never got better than 98.

;) no wonder that this gives you a pretty nice pally - I rarely dice more than 84 (and even this is rare) and usually found it difficult to create a well ballanced paladin :( Donaldus is an exception though :)

[IMG] It's much easier to roll a high sum for Some classes - Rangers and Paladins stand out especially. Check out their minimum values in case you haven't already done so.

    Best roll?
Not sure, but around 96-98. I use 90 as a benchmark when rolling and keep going until I get 90 or more. Could use Shadow Keeper to fix it but rolling is kind of fun in itself. :p

    Roleplayer or Powergamer?
Those are just words. We're all on a sliding scale were we have more or less of both in ourselves.

[IMG] forget BG2, what about best roll in "real-life" AD&D, just one roll for everyone and the DM makes the best of it for your class. i personally don't rcall getting anything higher than 85. i think most of you won't either.

[IMG] Haven't posted for a while (mostly because I haven't played BG2 for some time) but this topic sounds interesting. Just want to add some of my thoughts.

Earl Grey, I'm glad to note that I'm not the only one who enjoy rolling to get the "right" stats for my characters. I can literally spend hours clicking "Reroll" to get 18/00 strength for my warrior. I derive a sense of satisfaction just accomplishing that! (I think I hear jeers of "Get a life!" from out there). My justification - as a child of the god Bhaal, my character has inherited outstanding attributes relevant to his/her mission in life.

As for the perennial debate on powergaming, again I agree with Earl that we are all probably powergamers to a certain degree. How many of you out there put proficiency points in weapons in which you know ahead of time that you will be getting during the course of the game (such as the Crom Faeyr) and not on what you think your character should be using. Or, if first time through a the game, could resist switching to a newly-acquired powerful blade/flail/whatever and adding proficiency points to that even though it's not "in character"?

For example, thieves (including dualled characters) are supposed to rely on stealth and wits to get around and as such uses daggers and short swords that are easily concealed, but how many out there are swinging the Celestial Fury? Halfling (I don't suppose many choose that race) warriors would find it awkward walking around with anything longer than a short sword even when sheathed.

I enjoy BG and BG2 from the immersion in the storyline. To a great extent, I try to role-play my characters but I also like to get started on the right note (read attributes). I found that otherwise, the combat becomes more difficult and having to reload again and again (sounds familiar, eh?) detracts from my immersion in the storyline. Come on, guys, if we really, really role-play, dead is dead, right? Unless your companions resurrect you on the spot or drag your body to a temple, you'll have to start over. (I understand this will actually be implemented in multiplayer Neverwinter Nights and dead un-resurrected characters will restart at Level 1. Then, we can really role-play.)

And another thing, how many of us reload again and again to defeat Kangaxx? To me, this fits the description of powergaming. How many will say, "Hey, that lich/demi-lich is too powerful for me so let's just leave this quest alone". Show of hands, people, how many did the latter?

Having said all that, the most important thing (IMHO) is just to have fun, people!
(even if the fun is rerolling for three hours just to get the right attributes - couldn't resist adding that!)

[IMG] I can quite well understand people that can roll the dice for hours ... I find it quite relaxing to do so. Just going to the MP menue and go ahead for 15 minutes ...

Usually it takes quite a while untill you get really good stats but it´s well worth the waiting - who enjoys to play a weakling for the sake of roleplay? If so, let me ask if you set int and wis on 3 for the sake of identification too ... :D

With my first character I decided to roll once and that's it. With my luck it was very crappy character.. a paladin with strenght of.. 13? or whatever it was. Can't remember. Thank god I found girdle of streght pretty early in the game.
I found it stupid to be pressing reroll billion times. I rather join lottery and might actually win something out of it.. :)

I actually spent about half an hour to reroll my BG2 hero. Although I used Hex editor to losen up things in BG1 when I played it for god knows how many times, I wanted just to see my fortune in BG2.

For Gaxx, I reloaded the game probably 20 times, then I left it, gone for story, returned and got him in single strike.

These are not the same things. I used my brains to slay Kangaxx, rerolling is just automatic mouse clicking.

[IMG] Heh. I usually stick to my 1st roll. As long as I max out Str. Dex and Con and have enough for an above 10 Charisma I'm happy. Who cares about Wisdom and Intel. when you're making a fighter. "R'syil Slash!" :D halfling paladins... whatta concept... :p
