So I'm sorta nervous about adding Mods to the game as I know just enough about this kinda stuff to get myself in trouble with out really know ing how to fix it. The only thing I'm really looking to do is to make playing more fun, less combersome, and more true to the game style play. I recently dusted off my collector's edition of IWD2 so all the disks are there. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

On the top of the forum list you will find the Sticky: A comprehensive link-list of ALL IWD2 mods. It lists all the mods. You can decide for yourself what is worth the risk, but at some point you´ll have to chance it, or not. I can only say that I detailed the known problems of the mods in the link-list, so if you read carefully, you shouldn't go too far wrong. I'd advise against installing Icewind Gate right away, since you have limited computer skills. But most of the other mods are quite easy to install. Good luck!:)

Thanks Coin, I just took a look at them and I think I can handle most of them. I think I'll skip the Baldur's Gate one though.

You'll find all you need to get you started right here on SP.

It depends on what you're looking for.

Check out A comprehensive link-list of ALL IWD2 mods by coineineagh.

-Light of Selune by Crucis is a mod that changes quite a few things, makes traps more dangerous and adds tons of new items to the game.

-Tactics4IWD2 by Wu Min is a great mod if you're looking for challenge. It's very well put together and doesn't rely on cheese. Fair warning though it can be pretty hard.

-IWD2 Ease-of-Use by Westley Weimer is a rather ancient mod but it may help you it has numerous components though I'd skip a few of them (be cautious read the readme as it's well documented and take your pick).

-You may also want to check out Icewind Dale II Tweak Pack.

-Undead Targos Mod by Westley Weimer changes the goblins replacing them with undead creatures and adds a few spellcasters to Torak's clan. I'm not a big fan as it's either impossible to defeat the foes or all too easy when you figure things out (the modder has added scrolls and a magic weapon that make the undead creatures a joke). It started as a good idea but the implementation is flawed.

-The IWD2 NPC Project is a great mod if you look for interaction with party members like in BG2. It provides you with 10 NPCs that you can add to your party so you have some variety. The starting stats and feats are not a powergamer's choice but you can use Dalekeeper to change a few things if it doesn't suit you. If you want party banter and interaction in IWD2 then it is the mod for you.

Regarding messing the game with mods, all I can say is that as far as mods are concerned it's best to pick up a few and not to get carried away. Just decide what you want to change in your game and go for it. Some mods work well together but others don't (for instance, running the NPC project with the Light of Selune won't cause any problem).

And don't forget to patch your game to 2.01! ;)

EDIT: that's what happens when you take too much time to type a post. :p

Having played a lot of games both unmodded and modded, I've discovered a more philosophical standpoint about the mods in general.

    In rule form:
    1) Thou shall only get one (1) chance at playing the game "the way it was meant to be played", as a complete newbie. Thou shall not spoil it by using mods at that time.
    2) Thou shall only get a limited amount of playthroughs powergaming/roleplaying various aspects of the game before it gets repetitive.
    3) The game shall face an eternity collecting dust on a shelf.

Whenever you introduce mod(s) into the game, you're allowed to return to step 1. In case the mod in question only has limited amounts of change (ie. not a complete overhaul of precisely everything), the reincarnation of step 1 will also only be partial. Also, poor balancing/writing/coding of the mod may cause further spoilage of this nirvana state.
