A question about Hell...(Right after you kill Irenicus in the Elven City)

I am currently collecting the Tears of Bhaal and I am kind of stuck on one of them.

Its the Demon by the name of Selfishness. Supposedly as per my walkthrough you can go in once to speak to the demon and he nabs one character, you reload, at boots of speed to that same character and have them run away from the demon. If this happens, once again supposedly, then you take no adverse affects.

I am just wondering if this is true and how would you work it. I have tried it a couple of times, and in this case its Jaheira, she gets about half way to the west door but it aint enough.

Any ideas or should I take the Dex penalty and hp penalty.

Just a couple of comments (neither one of which really answers your question):

    1. Speaking as a reformed "walkthrough junkie", I hope you're not playing the game with a walkthrough in your lap. It basically sucks all the fun out of the game, and reduces it to a "paint by numbers" exercise. (I ruined Planescape: Torment for myself in this way. :wail: )

    2. What you are specifically trying to do here sounds like an attempt to exploit a bug, also known as cheeze or cheating - not the preferred way to play the game. :nono:

    (Hope I didn't come across sounding too self-righteous here. :D )

Can't the sacrificed character just be resurrected? I know you can't resurrect elves, but you could rearrange your party so the second member is not elven.

Edit: Oops.. forgot to address what you wrote. No idea; I never tried running away like that.

I cannot recall just who it was on this forum that answers your question:

The character that got 'held' had an active contingency spell where if they were helpless a spell would kick in. In this case it was by accident that the 'held' character got out of that held state. If I have it right, the character that is now not held opens the very last left side of screen door and you lose experience points but not the other two losses for the 'good' path. Therefore, you get only one loss vice 3 with the tear of Bhaal in this instance. After you get the tear of Bhaal, you can then move the previously held character back to the rest of the party without suffering the bad effects of the 'good' path.

The sacrificed character doesn't just have to run away, he has to make it to the door and open it. (This can be done before he is held.) Happy cheesing.

I really dont see this as cheating.

There are many different ways to get where you want to go and I like to look at all the ways and see which one I like or not.

Walkthroughs are there to help those who are unable to crack the system or those who like the game but dont have the time to crack the system.

In my particular case I dont have the time to test run everything I can find so I follow the basics of the walkthrough, get ideas on what I like and what I dont like and at one point I will play the game again and I would have an idea of what I want to do.

I play a fighter/mage, not necessarily my character of choice but it was recommended so I am trying with it. Once I have an idea of what the game is going to be like I will try the monk, as it is my ideal class or maybe a plain fighter. I am more inclined in playing single character classes as I find them more challenging.

Thank you for all the replies, even those ones that had nothing to do with the original topic.

Oh and by the way my question is still not answered, but I think I have made my decision on how to approach this particular tear.

Geez louise -- you lose 1 point in dex, 2 hit points from your maximum hit points, and a minimal amount of experience. Just take the hits and move forward.

I'm always cheezy in this part, -1 to dex? No thanks, if one can simply "run away" from it.

[IMG] Couldn't you just offer a character with the Bracers of Dex.... so that the loss would be negated?

Hmm, yeah, that should work, as long as you unequip the bracers before the loss (otherwise a bug will kick in and you'll be stuck with 17 dex).

Well, no help with Jaheira, but with Aerie you could always give her a contigency set to fire when helpless that gives her free action. That will undo the hold. I've never done that, of course  .

Maybe give Jaheira the ring of free action?

    Thanks for the advice.

Rastor thats an interesting point you raised about the Ring of Free Action, will try that.

BTW I have no problems with the losses, but I would like to find out if in reality you can find a way in the game to suppress those losses.
