What to do with $40,000?

Discussion in 'BG2: Shadows of Amn (Classic)' started by biggreenpriest, Jan 31, 2001.

  1. [IMG] Alright, it isn't that much. But it's my first time through.

But I've got 10th level characters, I haven't paid the thieves the 20k yet to get to Imoen....what should I use my money for first? That nifty +4 staff for Jaheira?

And when should I pay the 20k to the TGuild? I would hate to waste that money.

I just beat the elemental lich (difficult, had to throw a bunch of monsters at him and he had to make a mistake of summoning a giant bony hell critter that attacked him instead of me! And then I ran around until his defenses wore thin.)

I'm currently working through the slavers for XP, trying to level up everyone before I try and tackle P. Sphere.

[IMG] I wouldn't be in a hurry at all. The game isn't timed, and you really should be of a relatively high level before going to get Imoen...I'd say 14th level or so on average.

So go ahead...Have fun! Spend all you want! You'll find plenty o' coin in the Realms!

Buy a lot of booze and get everyone drunk.
    :D
But seriously, buy the Sleeper+2 for Anomen or Viconia, Tansheon's Bow for Yoshi or Nalia, The Cloak of Displacement, The Blade of Roses(equip it before you talk to Storekeepers) Mauler's Arm for Viconia, as many enchanted arrows, bolts or bullets as you can get, every spell in the adventurer's mart, Archmage/Vecna robes, belts of strengths for Jaheira and finally as many potions of extra healing as you can find.
    :D

  4. [IMG] Sir B,

Great info on when to go after Imoen. With the dreams constantly hitting you, it seems like the game is driving you to do that sooner rather than later.

I had completed all the areas outside of Athkatla as well as most of the quests found within the city before paying my gold.

If you feel any love for your little sister, help her, and do it now!!!! Don't listen to any club swinging half-orcs in that matter.
But see to it that you get a second opinion on that 20K pricing; it will help you even if you take the original choice (wait along one or two more nights).
You will return (well, maybe at least, if your good enough) and can do all the other quests later, so you don't loose anything.

[IMG] There are quite a few dreams in the first two chapters but they die off after that and the pressure to rescue her eases up. I've paid the money (think it was only 15,000gp) but still haven't tried to free her; I think you have to perform vampire-related quests before the Shadow Thieves will help you, and vampires scare the blood out of me. And because I really don't want to rescue her. She's a crappy thief, and there are more interesting wizards (Jan, Edwin, Aerie) in the game. I'm in Chapter 3 but I'm going to hold her off as long as possible.

Just kill her when you rescue her. That is, if they don't have her teleport away.

    Syl...

  9. Syl, why kill her? My stars, I'm a big, green, lawful priest. That would be horrible!

And I don't know anything about the teleportation.

Anyhow, keep up the good suggestions. I'm probably going to spend the whole 40k on supplies. Money seems to be plentiful in BG. I'm not anywhere near finished, having completed a few quests.

Make sure you have lots of money (~$25,000) when you down Under though. They have lots of nice goodies, and they're all real expensive.

Really, don't anyone listen to that garbage about either dumping or killing Imoen. She saved your sorry hide more than once, and the least you can do is set her free, but for anyone of good alignment taking her into the party is a must. At least in my opinion. Don't pretend to be role playing then, if you don't. And lousy excuses like: My character didn't know her in BG1 don't work either.

A note to you biggreen: try to kill the shadow dragon before going after Imoen. It'll drop a set of scales Cromwell the smith in the Docks can make into the best leather armour in the game. Which, of course, you'll give to Imoen. :)

At least that's what I did. Worked out fine, she's got an AC -4 without any protections. ;)

[IMG] 40k, that's it? At one point I had over 200k with me and din't know what to spend it on since I already had all the spells for Aerie she could use and there was nothing good to buy. I ended the game with 215k. It was nucking futs

Bah... I killed Imoen a couple of times. Then again, I was neutral-evil on all accounts, and only using her to get closer to the shattered one. I wanted him to show me what I really was, and she was just an ignorant, bratty pawn.

[IMG] Whats wrong with killing Imoen? She bagged ass on me because I wasn't being nice enough for her in the first one, she was the only one free when I was being tortured by that inept eqomaniac Irenicus, and if I want to take dadoo's place as Lord of Murdur I need to kill off all my siblings anyway.

    No No No No NO

Give the money to the thieves as soon as poss and when you go and see them you get two VERY cool magic items. An amulet of power that not only protects from level drain (meet lots of vamps in the strets...thi will sure help) and lowers casting time for spells etc etc etc.

AND a +2 Ring of Protection.

As far as i know this is the only way in the game to get these two items.

    So go get NOW!!!!!

Bunch of friggin Imoen haters around here. What's wrong with you people?!? Ah, no need to get into this argument here though. I'd say go and get Imoen before/when you have 750,000 exp. If you want to use her in your party(and I'd suggest it), try and enter spellhold before you get 900,000 - 1,000,000 exp. Imoen will only have about 400,000 exp when you rescue her, so you need to leave some experience for the taking after you rescue her so she can reach her full potential before the games end. And how is it I only finished the game with about 20,000gp. I basically went broke buying stuff before I went on to chap 7. Odd.

OK, back to the topic. Don't worry about paying the thieves such a large sum. They will give you ways to make it all back, and perhaps some more(don't guite remember). I'd buy whatever good armor you can afford. Buy Balduran's Plate for sure. And I'd invest in the Robe of Venca/Archmagi robe/Bracers AC3 for your mages. Also, buy decent weapons. But remember to save money for the Drow merchants in the underdark. They have nice items.

Tal, why give the black dragon scales to Imoen? She can't cast while wearing them. I gave them to Minsc to use while scouting, a much better choice I think. I gave Imoen the Archmagi robe, Cloak +1, and Ring of Earth Control for AC. Since she's primarily a mage who picks locks and finds traps, she doesn't need a great AC, nor does she need armor that impairs spell casting when you can't remove armor during combat.
