Infinity Engine voice sets are done in that Infinity proprietary quasi-wave format, which is why they won't play in typical players. Don't know why they're not working for you in-game though. I could link you to a decoder that would allow you to play them independantly, but that won't solve your gaming issues.

After downloading Near Infinity and extracting the files myself, it seems that the programs Export function is just not working, likely why the files I downloaded did not work. It does however make a functioning WAV in order to play the file from within NI, and if you copy that out, after it's done playing, but before clicking another file, you can get it.

And hence, I've made my own Yoshimo pack. Here it is, in case anyone else is interested and unable to find it elsewhere.

That file's been up for years and downloaded thousands of times, so I seriously doubt that if it didn't work that nobody would have reported it by now. What Gaear said (and what's pointed out in the archive's readme, by the way) is valid, the wavc files normally don't play in typical players, but this is a first that I've heard that they wouldn't work for someone in-game. They weren't extracted with NI either, it hasn't even existed yet back then. Here's the archive's readme:

Yeah, I read the readme. I think what happened was that I hadnt reloaded the program after I put the files in the sounds folder, which was not a problem for the normal .wav soundsets, but may have been causing the abnormal ones to not load up properly, since the engine needs to decompress them or somesuch.

Also related question that has been bugging me for years:

Is there any way to play Vhailor's sound files (from the voice pack) independently of BG, like the OP is asking for?

They are truly badass and I just really want to listen to them right now :S

Anything can be played with the right codecs and/or programs. I think wavc files play natively in Winamp for me...
