Well, first off, Americans tend to believe their own propaganda. They have to or else they will be branded with the enemy [whatever that is] for not conforming. The second part, regarding the folks abroad, we just have great PR. Too bad the reality no longer matches it, if it ever did.

Some can argue that it never did live up to those ideals. Personally, I believe that it did to some extent, once upon a time, but it no longer does. Things are mostly in a downward spiral.

Miklós Horthy was not a war criminal; I'm sure you don't say this because your history knowledge is very poor; rather because that is what many Romanians would like to see. Horthy had controversial decisions (including positive decisions not just for Hungary), as every leader, but that is all. Live with it.

no , i am sure he was a mass murderer and pretty sure he was a war criminal (my knowledge of Hungarian military actions in ww2 is rather slim ) and trying to defend him is simply pointless i don't even have to point out small facts to prove it i just have to ask you how many Jews died because of him ?

My understanding is that Horthy made several attempts to stop the deportation of jews. That's not to say he was perfect though since he eventually caved in to the German demands and is at least partially to blame for Hungary's belligerent policies before and during the war. He is pretty much similar to other old generals who ran countries in Europe in that he mostly just feared communists more than Nazis and made the call to ally himself with Hitler. He could have probably been tried since people in Nuremberg were sentenced for similar actions but I suppose he had some friends to influence the decision not to prosecute.

If he had been a war criminal, he would have been prosecuted in Nuremberg, and Americans surely wouldn't have protected him. He had controversal decisions, as many other leaders, but he just wanted the best for the country (without becoming a war criminal and mass murderer).

The common misinformation of many people in Romania (that Horthy was a mass murderer) is only the result of nationalistic blindness and propaganda.

Is that so? So the Allies didn't make compromises with people they considered valuable?

Off the top of my head I know of at least one case that contradicts your, well, reasoning. I wouldn't draw too much from the absence of prosecution. Horthy was a staunch anti-communist. It made eminent sense for the western allies to spare him in light of the emerging Cold War.

They did. But if Horthy really had been a mass murderer, it would have been really difficult or impossible to save him from prosecution. All this is irrelevant, however, as there are historical facts that prove the things mentioned by Morgoroth as well.
