Friendly fire was on, even on the lowest difficulties, in the old BG games, I belive. Aparantly friendly fire makes games way hard these days...

I say to thee, nay. I'm currently playing a DA:O game on Normal and I can hurt my party with a fireball or cone of cold. Did it two days ago, in fact. Only on casual on PC does friendly fire turn off. On normal, it does 50% of normal damage to allies. Higher difficulties are 100%.

You are both correct. It is the difference between console and PC versions of the game. Consoles have friendly fire enabled on hardcore and nightmare while on the PC it is enabled on normal.

Assuming you're playing on the PC, there is a mod that fixes this issue right handily. It adds friendly fire back to all difficulty levels.

Certainly, but that's not the point. The point is Bioware felt the need to take several steps to dumb down this game in an attempt to appeal to a wider audience. Removing friendly fire was a conscious choice, made to avoid scaring off casual or lazy gamers. Any tactical effort required to survive battles in Origins was removed in favor of making combat "streamlined," and "visceral," and "frantic," and "rapid," and all the other buzzwords the publisher thought were more important than keeping what worked in place.

Not happy. I enjoyed the game somewhat, but that's beside the point - I asked for Baldur's Gate and Bioware gave me Icewind Dale.

Icewind Dale should ever only be enjoyed as Icewind Dale, and BG as BG. And it doesn't help that these days Icewind Dales are everywhere.
This is may not be a very good analogy, but I hope it made sense.

Not a good analogy, because you're comparing two great games. I'd kill for another Icewind Dale. Or another Baldur's Gate.

I asked for another Dragon Age Origins, but got Dragon Age Light, Low Budget with a healty heaping of action game vs. RPG.

You're point is taken, and not in any way contested. My point was simply inform a fellow gamer who might not be aware of a good mod related option. Just because I agree with your point doesn't mean I feel compelled to hold back information related to the topic that might be helpful to others.

I would say I'm not happy. I did have some enjoyment while playing the game, though the third chapter was a chore, but I can't imagine myself ever playing that game again, and the truth is that I'm used to expect much more from Bioware.

I will keep buying their games, but I'm not pre-ordering again.

I voted that I haven't played it yet, which is true, but the second part of that sentence makes it sound somewhat more forgiving towards the game than I feel. Fact is, I wasn't very happy about the first game, so I wasn't expecting much of the second either. The combat of the first game was such that it made me quit playing the game altogether, and from what I hear and read about the combat in the second game, I'm pretty sure I would hate it even more than that in the first game. Not to mention the reused dungeons and lack of story.

If the last option had been "I haven't played it and never will", it would've been the right option for me.

The one thing that really rubs my rhubarb about this game beyond the dead city, unresponsive plot, idle kirkwall janitor central character and the total idiocy of every group in the city was the damned glowing exclamation marks above quest givers/recievers heads.

Hey moron you're obviously not bright enough to read a journal or follow instruction so just farm these golden marks even if you've got no idea what quest you're starting or completing. I'm not the sharpest pencil in the case but by Odin and his eight legged horse i'm not that bloody slow.

    Sorry, rant over.

Very true. If a game injects **** into your mind and body, its best to get it out.

Truth be told: this is arguably the most dumbed down game I have ever played (i just tried to re-play it...).

    Not happy!
Liked the First one, even though it did not live up the the hype to be BG like; was a nice game and had potential.-

    But I'm glad I didn't buy DA:2.
Played it a t a friends and knew after half' an hour how much i liked it, not.

Oh, and the comparison to Icewind Dale sucks!
If DA:2 had just a wee-little bit of IWD in it, it would have been a far better game!

A friend of mine is a fan and bought me a copy for my birthday, which pretty much obliged me to play it. To be honest, I would have probably tried it out at some point anyway :) .

Overall, I liked the game - I'd say my opinion would fall into the "somewhat" category. I have quite a few remarks and I was disappointed by a few things, but I enjoyed playing (mostly), the game had me hooked, and I found myself immersed in the plot. Now, did I find some elements of combat cartoonish and unfitting the style of part one? Yes. Were there various technical and plot issues that annoyed me? You bet. However, I still found it a fairly enjoyable RPG. For all the supposed "dumbing down", I felt that my decisions and playstyle guided the plot and how I decided to play Hawke mattered - which to me is the cornerstone of what makes a RPG.
