[IMG] When I change areas in Baldur's Gate the city the game crashes. The same error occurred when I went into Thundersmithy's store in Beregost. However, installing TotSC fixed that; but it did not fix this! Please help!

I never heard of this before although my game crashed many times before but that was because of my lousy computer. I think you should also tell some of the statistics of your computer such as your OS, speed, graphics card, etc. when writing such threads so that we can find out what's causing the crashes faster. Do you have the patch installed? Is there a specific error when the game crashes or are you just thrown out of the game?

OS = Windows ME; but there should be no problem...I played BGII and IWD on the same computer. There is no specific error, it just goes to the loading screen and freezes. The CD drive also starts to sound noisy, like its having trouble reading the CD. Maybe it is just something wrong with the CD 4?

[IMG] i had this problem once. The game crashed because it couldnt read the cd properly and then continued to crash thereafter.

I managed to solve the problem by going into the cached areas folder and deleting all the cached files so that the game had to start caching from scratch.

    Hope this helps.

Maybe you should get XP instead of ME.

If it loads areas fine from the other cds, CD 4 might be broken. Try doing a full install if you have enough free space.

Indeed. WHen this problem only occurs to cd 4 and you don't have enough space for a full install, just reinstall and choose Custom Installation, then you can select beside the default stuff also all of cd-4... when you've done this, you don't have to use cd-4 anymore at all.

[IMG] Intentioner, could you elaborate on destroying cached files?

I probably do have enough for a full install, but if I save my saved files on disk, will they work if I reinstall the game? Is it simply copy and paste? I go to the save folder in the Baldur's Gate folder and copy the game on a disk and then put it in the save folder when I reinstall, right? I know I sound paranoid, but this does not work with some of my other games, especially the Lucasarts ones.

[IMG] Okay, inside your baldurs gate directory, wherever you have it installed (c:/program files/blask isle/baldurs gate) there is a folder that is called 'cache', or 'cached files', i can't remember it's exact name.

Inside that folder are all the recent area files that you have visited recently. These should be called 'AR****' if my memory serves me correctly. None of these should be your saved games as they should be in the saves directory. Simply delete the contents of this folder and then start up the game.

I have had to do this many times and it has always solved the problems. However, if you are worried about losing saved games (which like i said, are kept in a different folder) then back them up by all means.

As for the full install, i just recently changed pc and just pasted my saves directly into the saves directory and it worked fine.

    Any problems, post back. :)

That usually happens when you play on the wrong CD, change it, then it plays up. The solution would be to always enter the correct CD.

Sorry, that was a bit useless

Okay, i had a similar problem, the game crashed sometimes without a reason. I installed TOSC. Everything seemed to be okay. But it wasn't. The game began to crash when i reached Cloakwood Mine.
I looked on the TOSC CD where i found the patch for 5512. And a readme that told me i should never play it TOSC without the patch (thanks). Installing the patch didn't help. Deleting the specific areas in the Temp-folder didn't helped. I had to uninstall everything. Reinstall BG, TOSC (both full installation), 5512Patch and now it works fine, it's faster.
The "temp" folder is empty now. And i won't change the cache size because: never change a running system.

Deleting the cached areas, can help a lot, I used it mostly in BG2. But I think the best if you copy all of your CD on the harddisk, and in the baldur.ini file you have to reset the path of the CD1,CD2, etc.
What I don't know is the cache is still used this way? Is there any possibility to switch the caching off?

[IMG] In the setup screen (not the in game setup but the other setup where you assign keys to various functions) there is a slider where you can set the size of the disk cache.

I would guess you can set this to zero as you already have all the areas effectively cached onto your hard disk. That would probably stop the disk caching the areas each time.

Windows ME is THE most horrible OS ever! Get XP at least. That will almost guaranteed fix this and any other problem with your PC. I had ME for a couple months, then my computer started doing wierd things(i.e. crashes and freezes) I installed XP and everthing was fine. I have a AMD 1.8, 256, 40GB, GF2. It's great now and I have no problems with it. I highly recommend XP, although it may have some driver problems with old hardware(so i'm told, I've not had any problems whatsoever.

    Three folders should be emptied:
    - cache
    - temp
    - tempsave

This is the "old but gold" cure with ALL infinity engine games and is not related to OS.

    Hello!

I have another problem in BG. I have TOTSC and 5512 patch installed and I play the game in WinXP(DirectX 8.1). When I enter Duchal palace in BG for the first time, entering animation starts playing in endless loop, and I can't do anything to disable it, so it makes it impossible to finish the game. Other animations play normally.

Is there any way to disable animations in BG, or could someone at least tell me the baldur.ini animation code for this particular animation(the one when you enter Duchal palace)?

    Thanks for any reply!

Well, I suppose you could install the game disc for Baldur's Gate(the city. For me it's 5, i've heard otherwise though.) Just reinstall the game(be sure to save your save games), go to custom install, and choose to install all movies from that disc.

    Hello!

I already have all movies(and the whole game for that matter) installed on my HD and the problem is still there. The only way to fix this seems to be to turn animations off altogether but that option isn't available anywhere... very frustrating. Maybe if I entered animation code into baldur.ini the game would count this animation as if it has already been played and thus would make no more attempts to play it when I enter the palace... but I don't know the code :)
