I was contemplating running a party based from the characters from the 3rd edition books. For example, Tordek and Redgar are the Fighters. Mialee is the Elf Wizard, Honnett the Sorcerer, etc..... I can pool stats from ToEE as they are the premade characters or from another source if anyone can think of one off-hand. Also, if they know of any evil characters from the PHB or DMG or other source books that are not Campaign based.... This is NOT a powergame party. Just for a fun, vanilla game run thru. I was thinking of using the below. And since I only know the characters as the classes they represent, no multi-classing...

    Tordek - Shield Dwarf Fighter
    Liddia - Lightfoot Halfling Rogue
    Mialee - Moon Elf Wizard
Jozan - Human Cleric(Lathander, who I would take as the closest choice to Pelor...)
    Devis - Half-Elf Bard
    Krusk - Half-Orc Barbarian

Was also thinking of adding Vidalia the Druid instead of Devis or Alahandra(?) the Paladin instead of Krusk.

Has anyone tried this previously? If so, thoughts?

Here you seem to have enough melee capability.
I like Paladins but they are not great as spellcasters. You get more spellcasting power from a PC who alternates Paladin and Cleric levels. See the last posts in the topic: "Advice needed for chronic restarter ". I use Paladins as straight warriors.

Multiclassing for Lidda is discussed in the 3E PHB, so it is not a big deal. Generally it is not a good idea for your major spellcasters because it leaves them behind in maximum spell levels. Make it one or two levels at most until you reach maximum spell levels. I personally like a Rogue/Barbarian or Rogue/Ranger multiclass.

What makes you believe that straight 50/50 level split between pally and cleric is better than Pally(1)/Cleric(x) style mix-in? Please enlighten me. As I see it, if you're after clerical spells, you're better off going straight 20 levels into cleric ASAP rather than piling on useless pally levels.

Paladin in my party is the first character, he is the melee specialist. Second and third characters are Clerics. (Fourth is a Rogue/Ranger, fifth is a generalist Mage while sixth is a Sorceror.) As it stands a third Cleric is not necessary.
Though if I wanted to try a new type of PC, the Paladin could become a Cleric while the third position would now be open.
Maybe the warriors in 3E don't have the clearly defined advantages over a Cleric that they did in 2E.

warriors in 3E have more BAB and thus more attacks around than clerics, they also have more hp per level- however, the difference is rather small compared to the amazing spells the cleric gets.

Clerics have a better Will save than any of the warrior types (Barbarians, Fighters, Paladins and Rangers.)
Rolled hp, the 1dX hp that is gained at every level, where X is 4,6,8,10 or 12. Fighters, Paladins and Rangers have 25% more rolled hp than Clerics. Barbarians have 50% more rolled hp. Though, unlike 2E, the Constitution bonus hp amount is the same for all classes.
