Just take a short look at Imoen. She can use short/longswords, and she can be a real archmage after all. Now there is a potential example, but of course using your creativity you can find other ways as well.

You could always do the age-old thing of dualling a Kensai to a mage so the mage could actually use the swords effectively and reach a high level of wizardry. Never tried it myself, but it offends the purists so it must be good ;)

When making a kensai/mage, how do i make it exactly? Do i just start a game with a human kensai and when i gain a level change to a mage?
sry if this is a dumb question...

You're not trying to recreate Gandalf, are you? 'Cause you won't find Glamdring in the game.;)

As for your question, just start a game with a human kensai (or another fighter), and dual him. Just make sure you have at least 15 strength and 17 intelligence (though if this is going to be Gandalf, both the int and wis should be 18, and you should take maybe *** in longsword and *** in quarterstaff).

    Anyway, have fun playing!

Try a pure fighter/mage if your goal is a mage that can use longswords (the fighter abilities not taking center stage). Dual a normal fighter to a mage at lv9 (so that you can get max HP and great hit dice potential as a fighter). That way, you can use bracers and helmets as well as fighter-only weapons. I recommend +++++ proficiency points in crossbow (or shortbow), and the rest in Katana, not longsword (Dak'kon's Zerth blade!!) ;)

    Heh, yeah im making Gandalf...
My primary object is to make him to be able to use longsword (it would look cool in the game with a mage with a long sword!) but i dont know if its so important for him to be a good close combat fighter.
How does the dualing thing work when i duel my kensai to a mage? Do i get any spells at the start?

Yes, a first level mage gets one level 1 spell (you'll have to memorise and rest before you get it, as I'm sure you're well aware of). Not very Gandalfy, but it'll improve quickly. You might also want to have an Aragorn, a Gimli, a Legolas and a couple of hobbits around to protect you. A level 1 mage wont get far in this game without help.;)

If you only care that it "carry" a sword, then start as a fighter berserker kit and dual (not duel) at the beginning of the game. By choosing the berserker instead of the kensai, you will have the choice to wear helmets, bracers and other useful items that the kensai cannot wear...additionally the berserk benefit is nice when you need a quick powerup of mindshield or health, etc. Kensai benefits are primarily melee oriented and will not find many uses outside of melee whereas the berserker benefits are likely to find uses at other times.

Another very good first class to dual a mage from is a thief kit. You can start as a thief and get some very nice skills in a couple of areas of thievery. Thieves can learn longsword and shortbow but you will not be able to wear a helmet, although you would be permitted to use a buckler if you wanted. Many people like the bounty hunter for the trap setting, others like the swashbuckler for being able to get ** with longswords and *** for dual weilding, but for a mage, I don't think thats very important.

A mage with a longsword? This brings me to a totally unrelated gaming experiance I once had in real D&D. The party mage thought it'd cool to have a mage with a longsword, so he got the appropriate feat and bought a longsword. First fight, he tried to use the sword and rolled a 1, dropping the sword. As he stooped to pick it up, a goblin bashed him on the head with a morning star (critical hit on attack of opp.) leaving him bleeding to death on the ground. Very amusing.
