It can get pretty ugly a few times in the game, but for me the toughest fight was against Kangaxx the lich. The is immune to everything, and then becomes a demi-lich. I finally killed him in the slayer form. Irenicus died pretty easy in the end. Also, Firkraag threw up a good fight. And personally, I hate mind flayers and liches!! love the drow...

I felt that none of the fights in SOA were too difficult. My toughest fight was against the Gith when I returned to Athkatla from the Underdark. The reason being was that I couldn't use any of my sorcerer's spells without having the Cowled Wizards come in (I didn't feel like paying the 5000gp).

For me, Kangaxx was a simple fight because I used the Protection from Magic scroll on my best fighter and sent him in by himself. Without that scroll, I agree that this would be a challenging fight.

Firkraag might have been tough, but I discovered that Pit Fiends are immune to his attacks. So I just gated a Pit Fiend right in front of him and let it attack. When he was 'Near Death' I sent the rest of my party in so I could get credit for the kill.

Depends on difficulty level. On the lower levels the enemies don't do much damage so the only real fear is strong magics, but when I played the game on the insane difficulty level Dragons were definately the hardest (no cheesy tactics)

My toughes fight was against Firkraag the first time. I think I did 20+ reloads. It was really funny, finally I had to resort to cheese but it didnt work that well.

For me Irenicus was a disapointment, I think there are plenty of more difficult enemies in the game and imho so should the end boss be the toughest.

Well, on the current game I am on(solo assassin/mage) the hardest fight has been this group of 4 greater werewolfs in the Domain of the Dragon. They regenerate like crazy and have a lot of magic resistance. I eventually just gave up and snuck past them. Filraag was a joke compared to these guys.

I found Firkraag pretty easy. Doom, greater malison, and finger of death equals one dead dragon.

For me personally, the game got easier as it went along. My toughest fight was against that Gavarias guy who Edwin sends you to kill in the docks district. His symbol of fear sent my party scurrying, and his shield spells made him invulnerable as I didn't have breach at the time.

Definitely twisted rune - this fight offers a rainbow threat .... a little bit of everything

Anyway, IMO dragons and liches are always tough, even with experience. When you underestimate them they wipe the floor with you.

At least you can prepare for the twisted rune, it's a lot easier than running into the odd lich when you're not prepared for it. I really hate any creatures that regenerate, when you're soloing you just can't deal enough damage before they heal.

Wow, post number 420 for me ;).

I got into a couple of fights where I just rushed into them and got killed. The group of blind priests in the beholder lair. I reloaded and they were so easy to kill once I knew they were there ( cloudkill, fireball, backstabX5).

Toughest fight to date was probably the first time trying I ran into a lich without any idea of what to expect. It was the one guarding the torso of Kangaxx. No magic protection scrolls, no high level spell protections. Just breach followed by brute force and ignorance. Blood, sweat and tears many times over, but I'd learned a lot by the time we finally got that bastard!

Decided not to take on any dragons in chapter 2, but in chapter 6 we're snacking on them before breakfast. Twisted rune much the same, although particularly for the rune, preparation is everything.

Moving onto Chapter 7 tonight, so we'll see if the final showdown changes my mind.

51% thinks that Kangaxx is the toughest opponent. and I am one of them, because I killed him quite early in the game.

And I really don't like mind flayers...
My Kensai has Int 6 and is dead after one brainsuck. not a very good meal for Illithids. I'm even dumber then Minsc! :D

[IMG] Prepared for twisted rune ... ??! perhaps now I am, when I experienced this fight first (my first time through) I was an ambitioned thief seeking XP by opening locks and disarming traps ... who unfortunately had a rogue stone in his pocket and found himself and his party fighting for his life  fortunately the helm temple wasn't that far away ... ;) ... I had to cure some level drains and to handle a few resurrections  ... that fight was a piece of cake

Mind Flayers aren't that hard. I just cleared out the Illithid Lair in the sewers with my soloing Assassin/Mage. I was wearing the boots of speed, I posioned my Tugian +1 bow, used the ring of gaxx to improve haste myself, and cast protection from evil on myself, which gives a +2 bonus to all saves. I just lured a few out at a time kept pumping them full of arrows and falling back. I rarley failed a save, in which case I had to reload, but they aren't nearly as hard as Beholders or Liches IMHO. The posion was VERY effective against them BTW.

Also another very hard fight is that large group of Beholders you encounter near the bridge during the Unseeing Eye quest, since you're fairly low level when you face them(at least I was).

The greenstone amulet is excellent when dealing with mind flayers. Anyways, I would have to agree with Lord Sarevok in that the beholders were very tough early in the game (I was soloing as well).

I agree, the fight with gauths, beholder and shadow fiends after the bridge can be pretty tough, especially if they come at you all at once, and if you don't have the Cloak of Mirroring.

It all depends on equipment exp and difficulty setting. Kangaxx is simple with 100% magic res and a +5 weapon, but impossible with a +1 weapon. I once killed firekraag with 4 lower resistances and a finger of death that wasn't much of a fight either. The final fight vs irenicus I once feebleminded him. All I had to do was hit him faster than he regenerates. Vs beholders all you need is cloak of mirroring and spell immunity. Vampires are in my opinion the most annoying enemies in the game, because they level drain you. On the other hand all you need is that lovely amulet and you'll be immune to it. Like I said it all depends on equipment and experience and the difficulty setting.

LoL.. I returned to Athkatla and the githyanki were waiting for me. I know I haven't got any savegames around so I just thought I'll fight them. It was easy but the cowled wizards got pissed off too. I killed them all then..

Id have to agree with jaocqin it was Firkraag cause its pretty hard for the actual levels u can first face him at. I had to conjure 5 fire elementals, and cast fireprotection on edwin myself korgan and yet another imported char (evil party)
i had to make my last char cause there are no good evil theifs, anyone notice they were slack with npc numbers compared to bg1? :p

Well playing on Insane difficulty, it's been a rocky road so far, but manageable. The toughest fight for me so far has been the Demon Knights in the Underdark. But then again, only two of my characters had Negative Plane Protection and I didn't worry about resting to learn it. But, truth be known, I haven't fought any of the dragons yet or Kangaax. So maybe the question is, what battle am I fearing the most? Well in my party's immeadiate future I am more afraid of facing Firkraag then I am of Kangaax. I say this because I know Firk is going to be dishing out some serious Insane damage on my characters (which don't even have hitpoints in the nineties yet) and because I have refrained from cheese tactics in this game and don't have any intention of starting some.

Oh yeah, those Adamantine golems I ran into in the Planar Sphere Control Room were tough as well. Just shy of the Demon Knights though.

For me it is the Demi-Lich so far. Took me 7 hours last night! Killed the lich no prob (one way - 3 fighters, 2nd way - spells and fighters, and 3rd way cheesy Yosh). Jahiera eventually did Kangaxx all on her own - scroll of undead protect, staff of rhynn (the only +4 weapon I could find at this stage (fighter just turned level 12)), ring of ram, and some haste. He constantly tried to imprison my eye. He did not even run.

The Gauths near the bridge were no problem as I created a fire elemental (immune to their atacks)and he killed them all without me getting near. Minsc also killed the beholder with his first blow so I did not even get to use the rift device. (what does it do?)

Those blind clerics got me too first time.

The mephits in chpt 1 until I attacked the portals. Wasn't I a stupid one?
