    newbie question...

I have a party of 5, I want to do all the quests possible in the game, but I can't take more than 1 NPC at a time, will I get the chance to pick them up again later? If not, who do I get the chance with and who dont I?

Most NPC`s you get to pick up later, but only once I think.(Well that`s what they did when i dumped them). For example:Jaheira go to the "harper" when you dump her,and Vylgar goes to his cabin in the Umar hills.

Most? Should I be careful then? I want to play the game extensively, doing every quest possible, is there any that I can't pick up later?

I played almost every quest in the game and it's easy. Just get Minsc and Jaheira and Aerie at least, they have no quests (except for Aerie but if you have her, you've already done it). Then get Korgan and do his quest. If you're done you say bey and get Nalia and do her quest (Korgan will be at the copper coronet) And so on leaving one behind at the copper coronet.
Remember though that once you used a character, his XP doesn't go up any more. I used Korgan when I just got out of Irenicus' dungeon and he was lvl 9 then. Now I'm lvl 19 and he still is lvl 9, because I left him in the copper coronet...

There is another quest that starts with Aerie being summoned to see Quayle (the playhouse quest), but I'm not sure it counts as a "personal quest"...?

On the XP-issue; If you wait for a long time into the game before you talk to an NPC for the first time, will they be the same level as if you had talked to them early in the game?

You can play the quests you can gain from a NPC and them dump him and get another NPC.
For example, get Jaheira and do the harpers-quest/ployer-quest. Then go to Umar Hills, dump Jaheira and get Valygar and play the planer-sphere-quest. Then goto the Temple, get Keldorn and play the unseeying-eye-quest and the Quest with Keldorn's family etc. The only thing you have to know is wich quests a NPC has so you don't dump him/her without doing all quests. There are walkthroughs where you can find the NPC-quests.

Hehe I now see Sarevok used the same example... funny :)

If you haven't already done so, and you want to find all of the possible quests, you might want to look through one of the detailed walkthroughs on this site:
    http://www.sorcerers.net/Games/BG2/index.php

I personally recommend the IGN guide for you. This has a section listing all of the extra quests. You can look through this, just noting the headings without reading the solutions. That way you can identify any quests you might have missed that you still want to do.

[IMG] thx all - very informative!

one last one... any looser NPCs with no quests that want to join your party?

(ie Imoen - she's been in my party from the beginning so I don't have Jaheira currently)

Well, Minsc is the only one I think. You'll have to free Imoen, so that's about the biggest quest in the game! But I haven't had al NPC's yet.
BTW If you leave some NPC's be and get them while you're lvl 16 or so, the NPC will be at the same level as the lowest in level NPC you have in your party (i.e. You are lvl 165, but Nalia is lvl 14, then Mazzy will also be lvl 14 if you haven't used her yet and you want to now) I believe that's how it works.

I'm not completely sure about that (NPC being the same level as you when you first find them). I know this has always been the percieved wisom but.... I was looking through character details using the Infinity Explorer Programme (yes I have too much time on my hands. If you have too, look at the editors section of this site) and I noticed that there are a number of different files for each NPC. These seem to represent the stats they will have at various levels and most only seemed to go up to about level 12 (I think - knew I should have made a note). So, don't be surprised if you come back to a NPC at the end of the game and he/she isn't level 18 (or whatever). Please feel free to corect me on this. In fact, hang on....

OK, I've just opened up the editor (look under creatures and you'll see what I mean).

    Aerie level 11
    Anomen Level 10
    Cernd level 13
    Edwin level 13
    Haer'Dalis level 15
    Jaheira 12
    Jan 12
    Keldorn 12
    Korgan 12
    Mazzy 12
    Minsc 12
    Nalia 15
    Valygar 12
    Viconia 13

Of course, this doesn't prove that they won't be at a higher level if you recruit them later in the game. It might be that Bioware just scripted the first few levels to balance game play. Has anyone else definately recruited an NPC late in the game (without having talked to them before) and found they had a low experience rating? (I seem to remember getting something similar in BG1 when I had to replace a NPC that I couldn't resurrect).

Based on a discussion in another thread, I thought it was time to check this. Using a party of level 17 to 19 characters I went to save Viconia from the stake. This was the first contact with her in the game (I had deliberately avoided her in case I needed her later). When I recruited her she was level 13 with 120,000 experience. Checking infinity explorer again it looks like this 120,000 is the maximum for all the NPCs except Imoen and Yoshimo (who are special). The multi and dual class are lower but that reflects the expereince in other classes.

If you wanna do all the quests play the game over a couple of times. If you do all the quests the first time the second time you play through would be pretty boring don't you think?

You can't do all the quests in the same game, i.e. quests related to different stronghold.

The game wasn't boring to me when I played it for the first time. Second finish completely made me cry outta boredorm. So now I'm mad. No more BG2! At least without expansion ;) :p

And you'll have to choose sides. Either Vamps or thiefs. Sorry. If you get Korgan to do his quest, get Edwin as well as some part of their quests is to be performed in the same dungeon.

Yeah, I did all the quests the first time through, and now starting a new game is like pulling teeth.

well, first off I played a good party, but missed alot of quests, then I played another good party and I think I tried all that there was to try with them. Now I play an evil party where I haven't any of the NPC's from the good party, quite a new experience
