Polymorph self question

I tried for the first time this spell mainly because I read about the possibility of polymorphing into a mind flayer, but when I cast the spell I didn't get that chance (only ogre, troll, bear and things like that). Do the choices of this spell change with ability scores, alignment, level...? I'm playing a lvl 14 chaotic neutral mage.

 

It doesn't have to do with that. there are just 2 different spells. The spell that can transform you in a mind flayer is the 9th lvl spell Shapechange

 

Then I'm afraid I'll have to wait till I get that nice little expansion.

Wait a sec! Shapechange isn't a new spell from the expansion it is available in SoA, so why do you need the expansion?

 

The Shadows of Amn xp cap does not allow a mage to get high enough in level to cast this spell. You could cast it from a scroll, but I've never been able to get this scroll unless I summoned it in from the console.

 

Shapechange scroll in SoA is available at Ribald's special store once you get in Chapter 6. Nowhere else. So, you don't need to cheat just to get it.

You can also get it casted once from the Limited Wish spell which is level 7 spell. Just ask the genie that you want to be anything you desire.
This means that you don't need XP cap removers or expansions to have it castable from the book. Ok, it's only once, but...

 

It's been a long time since I beated the game. I didn't remember Ribald had the scroll. As for the limited wish, I think I'll have to use some potions as my wisdom is not very high.

Oh, I have one more question. Besides the mind flayer, what other creatures can you shapechange to? -yes, I know, I could buy the scroll and see it by myself, but I just arrived to the Underdark and I'm too curious to wait-.

 

I played BG2 mostly with sorcerer or mage and I think other shapechange creatures are earth and fire elemental, giant troll and some kind of werewolf and also a golem, I guess it was stone or iron golem. I used shapechange spell sometimes just for fun, I don't think its very useful. Not with my playing style anyway.

 

You can transform into Mind Flayer, Iron Golem, Greater Wolfwere, Earth Elemental, Fire Elemental, or Giant Troll.

Thanks for telling me where that can be found Ex. Truth is, I never really took a look at Ribald's stuff, since I've always got better by that point in the game.
