I recently discovered this site and decided I would like to buy Baldur's Gate or something like it. Is BG1 worth the 20 bucks and my playing time or should I just skip to BG2?

    Smaug, don't skip it.

The graphics aren't awesome and neither is the AI, but it has a great atmosphere and the story is very good as well.

It's a VERY enjoyable game, even if the graphics are terrible by modern standards.

It ate at least a year of my life. :D

[IMG] And once you've became addicted like us people here, you can continue the story of your character in BG2 too. An if you also get Tales of the Sword Coast with it, you'll start at a higher level than normal in BG2, with tha same character stas too :p . Also, it's a great addictive game, what do you need a social life for anyway? ;)

BG1 explains a great deal of the story, and yes its IMHO better than BG2:SOA or TOB

I agree with everyone replied here before: play it. BG1 is really worth playing. You get much more from both games, if you play BG1 also. :)

I don't know what did you want to hear... I think at this forum everybody loves the BG1. This game is much more ballanced and enjoyable than the BG2. Do not skip!

There is maybe a chance that you won't like BG1 because of the way it looks. If that should happen you should go right over to BG2. I guarantee you that you would then do BG1, and you really have to, because that's where the story starts. It's also the best game in my opinion....

Would be just sad that you gave up on a great game like Baldur's Gate just because of bad graphics

The only tough thing about BG1 is the inventory pause feature.

    errr

    The Lack of.

I can live, very easily, with not being able to change armour. Or open a bag of holding or scroll case.

I understand why they did it like that; real combat, you don't pick through your pockets. But it takes a HUGE adjustment.

Other than that one, single thing, it's an excellent game. Well worth playing at least one good time.

I actually had a problem with BGII for a long time because the interface was so different from BGI. I adored BGI (and BGII, eventually) and I would suggest that you play this even if you never get around to BGII.

    I wouldn't.
You will miss the first half of the story and won't get attached to many of the characters.

Most BG1 NPCs find their way into BG2.

I would suggest playing number one then the rest... simply because you do not get so much of the story from skipping one... and it is fun going from the very very bottom level to the top through it all with importing and exporting hehe :) Just my two cents hehe

That is the only game that has a permanent spot on my computer. If I have to reformat, it is the first program back on.
    My only problems with it?
    1) It is to damn fun and it ends.
    2) If you have a significant other, it may cause tension when he/she wants to play a game!
The requirments for the game are such that it should run on almost any computer.
If not for the entertainment value, ply it for its educational value as well. Yes, educational value. You choose a path for your character to follow. Then you make choices, good or bad, in your character's life. You learn how your choices in life have consequences. You choose friendships and alliances in the game based on the path you have chosen to follow.
Elios, what in the world are you rambling about.
Just play it, it will be worth it, you'll love it!

Three key reasons to play BG1,

    1) It makes your story of your own protagonist more complete and more fulfilling if you make your way through the whole sage, from BG1 to TOB.

    2) You can use the various Tomes to improve the stats of your protagonist, which carry over to BG2 (but only for your protagonist).

    3) There is a certain amount of fun to playing through the type of fantasy game that is more realistic and typical of adventurers such as Hobgoblins, Bandits, charlatan level mages, etc. BEFORE you get into all that otherwordly and supernatural stuff that permeates BG2.
