Usually, each fence sells a few special items. Plus you can do the steal and sell back trick, so very handy to have them around.

So, where are they / how many are there in the game?

    Here's my list:
    Slums:
    Outside Jan's house
    Outside the temple
The guy in Gaelan's house? (does he count?)

    Temple:
Roger the Fence in the sewers

    Docks:
    Shadow Thief Guild
    Maevar Thief Guild (Gorch)
Outside Harper Base next to street lamp

    Bridge:
    Outside Derelict house
There's a guy near the central market that pops in and out at irregular times who offers healing too.. not sure if he counts though.

    [EDIT] Waukeen's Promenade
North of the eastern gate (Jayes) [/EDIT]

    Trademeet:
    Outside the northern entrance

    Did I miss any?

A fence is someone who buys stolen items. In real life the definition is probably more specific than that. In-game most merchants automatically know when an item has been stolen and refuse to buy it from you - the fences are those merchants who do not. Generally they make it clear when you speak to them for the first time that their wares are stolen.

I think there's a guy in Waukeen's promenade whose dialogue makes it clear he's a fence. Whether he's an active merchant, or just a "flavour" NPC, I can't remember...it's been a while since I last played BGII

In Bridge District, there is also a FENCE in the middle of the map, a little left above the "big" regular merchant (and the "harlot") you talk to for the tanner quest.. below the big central noble house i think, where you see usually empty "stores" in the street..

This one is very aleatory (only at certain hours at night i believe), but is very useful too : i know, this is with him i made my 625000 gold for the whole game (sell/thief/resell/rethief, etc): was very practical. :)

BTW, the Fence before Beredict house is really very good (i discovered this one later..) : even when you MISSED your thief thing, he just withdraw a little with an amused comment and don't become hostile ! : this is nearly a criminal incitation : you can thus really NEVER miss and risk absolutely nothing with him apparently, even if you miss, you can just retry the next time... he doesn't mind, this doesn't annoy him apparently. He seems to be the best Fence of all, imo, for this!.. (BTW, in front of Beredict House, bridge district again, a woman appears too, to the LEFT -the fence is to the right-, at certain hours with VERY good potions too : not a fence, but very interesting too).

So, to sum up, it seems that the 2 best districts and Thief paradises are The Bridge and evidently the Docks, so... very nice and practical areas each ones.. with the official Shadow Thief Guild fence being permanent too.. :) ;)

BTW, in the Docks, i believe that the "barman" in Maevar Guild "legal" entrance (when you do the Shadow guild quest.. you must talk to him for access maevar secret HQ behind, and pass the locked doors..)is a Fence too.. but i am no more sure. He has anyway very interesting items/potions too the first time you can talk to him.. and you can evidently steal them with ease. BUT Attention : he become forever hostile when you come back later in the game in order to complete your final mission with Maevar, and you loose him then forever: be sure to have bought/stolen/etc everything possible from him before this!... after this, he will be lost forever anyway. ;)

    PS:
Oops, in reading again the first post, i saw you had already listed those ones so.. and the one with Trademeet too i was thinking about to. I see no other ones for now too, sorry if this is somewhat a doublon so. I confirm for those 2 ones (middle bridge/Maevar) at least.. and for the one in northern Trademeet too so. ;)

Don't forget about the guy in the City's Sewers. I forgot his name. I think he only sells potions. :rolling:

The fence in Waukeens(sp?) Promenade is called Jays. He's outside the wall, just North of the Eastern gate. He's only there at night.

Oh cool! I had a funny feeling that the center of merchandise didn't even have a fence in it. Thanks Hardcase!
