Depends on what you're looking for in a MMO. I've been playing the Guild Wars series since release, but it's not for everyone. Like all games out there, there are pros and cons to each.

Yep. There's a ton of MMO genres nowadays thanks to consoles and handheld devices.

Most of the MMO's worth your time are pay-to-play, though there's some good ones where you only pay once for the game, without monthly fees.

The Elder Scrolls Online seems to be quite popular now they moved away from their subscription based model, though there's some content and bonuses you do not gain access to unless you spend $$ on the ESO Plus package.
Guild wars 2 also uses similar model of "pay once, play forever" and is a game that still seems to be quite popular.
There's also Crowfall, which is currently in early access. will have a similar model of pay once play forever. This game combines Fantasy MMORPG with mindecraft-like mechanics.
TERA is another good free to play MMO. no purchase necesary, though they do have an "elite" package you can pay $$ for. the game is fully playable without it, and the cash options are mostly ofr cosmetic purchases; though when you do reach the end-game, the elite package will make the game a bit less stressful (elite package players can enter dungeons twice as often a day compared to regular players for example, which gives you double the chance of finding good gear.)

and if MMORPG's arn't your thing/what you are looking for, you might want to look at some of the MOBA's out there.

League of legends is still quite alright, even though it's already been around for a long time now. - but the community is pretty toxic.
DOTA2 is also quite fun, but the skill cap here is really high, so if you have no experience whatsoever with moba's you might want to look elsewhere.
Heroes of the Storm by Blizzard is also good - they break up the gameplay a bit more with the added quests during maps, and the champiuons they offer are characters you're likely to allready know if you've played games like diablo/starcraft/warcraft.
SMITE has a cool concept wit h their champions being gods, like the Greek pantheon's Zeus, Bacchus, Hades & Hercules, the Egyptian's Ra, Osiris, Isis, etc.
instead of top down like the other ones, SMITE is played form the 3rd person perspective.

Again, these games are free to play, with the $$$ options they provide mostly being cosmetic. they won't offer items that will make winning easier, but usually there are items that will increase the gain of your ingame experience and currency (which you can subsequently use to buy new champions and skins for them at an accelerated rate compared to someone who doesn't use these boosting items.)

The vast majority of good MMOs are moving away from the terribad P2P model. Some do still milk the cow (i.e. WoW), but by and large, the model was replaced with B2P and F2P models with a cash shop for vanity items in both cases. Which is a good thing for those of us who spend a lot of time in MMOs. I've probably spent over 10k hours in both Guild Wars games together and paid around ~250 EUR for them over more than a decade, which is like 2 EUR/month on average for a stupid amount of gameplay time.

Also, GW2 has a F2P option as well. It does have some severe limitations, but plenty of my peons guild members enjoy playing the game on F2P just fine.

Neverwinter and D&DO are worth mentioning too, if only for being D&D.

I tried Guild Wars 2 but it inexplicably runs like total ass on my PC. Google has sent me to a bunch of forum threads with the same problem, but no solutions. In the end I deleted it and moved on.

That's odd. I mean, it's not a very optimized game, even all these years after release, it's still incredibly CPU-heavy, but there are still plenty of things you can do to improve its performance.
