I am in chapter 7 now.. in the elven city.. and I have discovered that the following stratgies which most of you already know, worked the best for me:

(other background---kensai half-elf as main character, minsc, valgar--now wielding celestial fury AND the crom faer, aerie, jaheria, imoen--replaced for yoshimo). I did NOT do the mindflayer underdark region---looked too tedious..

    1. breach is the best spell in the game. by far. it incredible for dragon slaying and lich slaying.

    2. dragons are much easier with breach. then they fall like card houses. although only possible for me when I was in chapter 6.

    3. kangaxx is a cake walk if you use a protection from magic scroll after you kill him in lich form. he will only try to imprison you and you can hack away (only with characters who have magic protection 100%). I did this without breaking a sweat.

    4. beholders are a joke when you use the mirror cloak. but very painful if you don't

    5. don't fight vampires when you are drained.. they will dominate you

    6. mind flayers are the single most annoying monster in the game---can kill too easily and quickly..

    7. kensai (pure kensai) are incredible BUT I see them as becoming weaker (in relation to all else) in the next addition because they cannot get their AC any lower.. my THACO with my +4 2-handed sword is about -10, but my AC is 2 ??????????

    other notes:

    1. the demi-lich is from the old module Tomb of Horrors.. perhaps the best thinking-person's high level module every made. I had that one as a kid and read it about 100 times.

    2. cloudkill is too powerful. I quit using it after chapter 2 because it ruins the game

    3. bodhi needs to give more explanation after/during her final battle

    4. the game is absolutely incredible

    5. that (#4) having been said, some loose ends and undeveloped stories remain, such as:
    a. all new areas after you emerge from the underdark are void of interest
    b. the dopplegangers. why? were they sent by irenicus? ???
    c. jan's quest. It makes me so mad that that damn person is abusing his family!!!!!!!! how on earth could they leave that in a game?? is this a lesson that the abused tend to stay abused? how dark and depressing.

ah well. great game. worth more than 40$ but don't tell black isle that!

Tomb of Horrors is a classic P&P AD&D adventure. This was before 2nd Edition rules came out. You fought very few monsters, but had to have "Indiana Jones" type instincts for pits and booby-traps.

I would rank that #1 in "Classic Modules", with "Vault of the Drow" as #2.

Does anyone else remember "Keep on the Borderlands"????

    Heh Mathetais,
I remember "Keep on the Borderlands" :) It came bundled with the Basic D&D set for characters level 1-3. That was a long time ago for sure. There was also the module that came with the Expert Edition. What was the name? Hmmm, something about an island.

    "Isle of Dread?" maybe

Does "Scourge of the Slave Lords" ring a bell? From the late 80s, so not that old. :p

The guys in the Guarded Compound (Ketta, Stalman etc) are the same ones that you fought against in that campaign.

What about "The Sinister Secret of Saltmarsh"? Wonderful module! In those days they knew how to make adventures... <grumble-grumble>... but the illustrations were often beyond crappy. ;)

edited in: Saltmarsh was an AD&D adventure.

The magic resist scrolls are sold by ...I think Ribald himself (in the promenade--the adventurer's mart).. they are kind of tricky to find in his inventory for some reason

Tomb of Horrors was amazing--a stand alone module that involved a TON of traps (all very very sinister) with a demi-lich at the end that liked to imprison people in its teeth.. many neat things about this module including limited the ways (!!!) to kill the demilich.. each character class had its own way of doing damage--for instance, thieves could launch gems at the skull/lich and do damage that was based on the value of the gem!!!!!!!! completely ingenious!

I believe the module involved Kangaxx himself and was written by Gary Gygaxx, the (or one of the) inventors of D and D itself

that 'secret of the salt marsh' was a basic d and d adventure I believe?? not sure.I had it and thought it was very interesting (now I recant--it was AD and D).

I remember those drow adventures---they involved the Kua-toa.. then then drow.. then the demonweb pits themselves!!! (with Lloth!!). a great series..

there was also a great series about giants..

    ahhh the good old days!

[IMG] Dont forget White Plume Mountain!

Great adventure, and that is where Black razor, Wave (originally a trident IIRC), and
    WHelm (dwarven hammer) originated.

The isle of dread was released to go with the expert D&D rule set (The old blue soft covered books).
