In most elections there are themes, some times the theme is easily recognized as in the Lincoln election of 1860, other time even the best of scholars argue over what they were. Sometimes those themes become an almost unrecognizable Orwellian cacophony as disparate groups try to shape themes of their own and make them fit (Usually) the opposition. The last election was like that and the losers gave a stark warning of the dangers of trying to paint your opponent in to dark a color when the problem is that no one else seems to recognize the caricature you gone to so much trouble to draw. There are of course other problems with the Democratic campaign of 2016, not the least of which is that it is now beginning it's second half century and is getting more than a bit stale.

The big problem though and one that is likely to plague the Democrats for some time to come is that they still don't have the first idea what this election was really about, interestingly they aren't alone in this boat, the Neocons are right there with them.

This election wasn't about personalities though the leadership in both parties would like you to believe otherwise, it was about whether or not we were going to embrace the slow death spiral of bureaucratic over reach and eventual death by slow strangulation, or once again strive to be an opportunity society and this time around one in which all people of talent regardless of color or sex could fully participate and there by make there lives and that of everyone around them better.

 

There are far too many people on the left who are "one issue" voters, and that one issue tends to be something that the majority in the middle may have thoughts about, but aren't things that will swing an election. Trump to his credit followed the philosophy of his friend "Bill Clinton" and focused on the economy and an America First philosophy. Trump and the GOP are more than willing to let the Democrats and the media keep focusing on an anti-Trump campaign. As long as the economy is continuing to go like gangbusters and unemployment stays low, nobody is going to care except the people who would never vote for Trump in the first place.

 

I think a lot of Trump voters had immigration has their one issue, which is a totally legitimate and valid concern. I voted Trump because of NAFTA, myself, and know a lot of liberals who did so (or at least did not vote for Hilary) due to all the deeply corrupt DNC stuff that was exposed by Wikileaks.

 

What makes trump different is a willingness to defend himself. This of course rubs Neocons and democrats wrong way, they expect mea culpas and apologies and cowering from anyone to their right and trump doesn't play that stupid game. That in a nut shell is why his base is extremely loyal. They've watch their supposed leadership take that crap for years and half the time act as if they agree with the disparagement.

What I really don't understand is why everyone ignores leftist calumny going back to the Adlai Stevenson campaign and pretends like that's perfectly acceptable, but let a Republican object to it and somehow that is vicious and mean spirited.

 

It would be nice too if someone would stop them from calling every seasonal mud puddle in the country a wet land.
