What character is the best tank? I'm talking Protagonist not npc. Which race/class/kit can absorb the most damage and stay in the fray the longest against all enemies...especially the tougher spellcasters (dragons/liches/mages/vampires/demons/cowled wizards/etc.). This includes the characters elemental and spell immunities/resistances, including use of his own personal skills like PFE on a Cavalier, weapon proficiencies and also inluding equipment commonly found/bought in the early/mid game (not late game items like Crom) AND who can deal out a nice amout of regular physical damage? I'm thinking Cavalier with Carsomyr...

personally, I'd say a beserker. their rage is great, and you can kick some VERY heavy ass.

I was thinking either Bezerker or Cavalier. Those are the only two classes I've tried so far but I still find my bezerker to take an impressive amount of damage before someone casts inprisonment or gives him the pokey-pokey. Grumbles...

Berserker, I think. His rage gives you some important abilities later in the game. You'll also go far with an Undead Hunter Paladin wielding Carsomyr. Vampires, liches, and nasty skeleton monsters are a constant plague.

Arngor, a beserker cannot be imprisoned. All you need to do is have beserker rage on...

What about a halfling or gnome barbarian carrying a 2 handed sword or halbred? Not only would it look very funny but would also make a great tank.

Well I've seen Minsc get plucked from my part lots of times and he had rage on, I can assure you that. I have seen those nasty liches cast inprisonment (or atleast I *think* it's inprisonment, I havan't memorised all the spell effects yet) cast inprisonment on Kurt while he's raged and a moment later I get the "dying" movie.

@Cesard: Tried that once, had a halfing kensai wielding two handed swords, he got very strong. Also a halfing barbarian/berserker dualling long swords and axes is very strong.

@Arngor: Minsc's rage is different to that of a barbarians or berserkers.

I have had my pc with rage on and just stood there smirking at kangaxx... trust me, it works. Korgan is similarly immune. Minsc's rage is an abnormality

To Terthe, cool I want to try this (hafling with 2 long swords) when I complete the game with my halfling Assassin.

Either Beserker or Inquisitor. The Rage immunities are amazing, but the Inquisitor is truly hideous against spellcasters. I don't know which is "best" in an absolute sense though.

Another vote for berserker, as we are talking tanks.
Inquisitors are very useful, but "true sight" and "dispel" are for the rear guard, not tanks.
For very good saving throws: a dwarf, or a halfling.
Halflings are limited STR 17 though. But they can romance, unlike dwarves.

A berserker dwarf can take lots of punishment, but I prefer finesse. A berserker elf dual-wielding long swords will connect more hits, and has better AC.

In any case, Berserker is the best tank kit for me.

To will - you can keep the str low as there are belts and gloves of strength.

There was a thread on this in the TOB forum not to long ago, and my answer there still applies - Ranger/Cleric (dual-classed, since this is SoA). You get all the priest spells and no armour restrictions. You'll have great AC and, with Armour of Faith, Iron skins, Nature's Beauty, DuHM, Chaotic Commands etc. you're almost untouchable. Blunt weapons only is no big deal since FoA is one of the best weapons in the game.

I would dual immediately at level 7 since in the case of the R/C there is practically no real benefit to waiting until level 9, and so you'd regain your ranger abilities much faster.

I have to agree with Splunge on this one - the Ranger/Cleric and its self buffing capabilities make it a virtually untouchable monster at hand to hand combat.

I would rank berserker as second - all those nice rage granted immunities are a real godsend.

You can dual your ranger right away and still get Iron skins later? So somehow your high level cleric / low level ranger can learn high level druid spells?

If C/R will be voted the best tank (I agree that it is), then I still vote for multiclass, even in BGII. That is how you'll end up with the best THAC0 possible, and hitting bad guys is important for tanks. :)

Berserker is the best tank(and I think the best class) in the game as I always say.
