[IMG] im going through the vale of shadows and there are all kinds of traps. i take the time to find them and then disarm them, but i see no yellow text informing me of any experience points gained by doing this. do you even get exp for disarming traps like bg2, or no?

Nope. BG2 was the first of these games (unless Torment did; I haven't played it) to give experience for trap disarming as well as successfully copying spells into your spellbook.

The reward in disarming a trap is in not being hurt by it.

This post is under IWD (Classic) ... and it is a very old post ... but just want to point out, you can use xpbonus.2da from BG2EE in IWDEE (as well as PS:TEE) to get xp for picking locks, disarming traps and learning spells. Place it in your override folder.

In PS:TEE you don't get xp for learning spells despite this override. Also, the calculation of xp is buggy -- it mistakenly treats your Fighter level as your Thief level for thieving xp. So if you switch from fighter at, say, L5 and bump up your thief to L20, you will not get the L20 xp. You will still get L5 xp. Weirdly, thieving xp for Annah works correctly (she is a multiclass fighter/thief as opposed to TNO who can only be any one class at a time).

Also, technically Darksun: Shattered Lands and Darksun: Wake of the Ravager were probably the first games to give xp for lockpicking and trap disarming ;) -- unless someone knows of an even older game.

You occasionally got XP for thieving in the Gold Box games, but not for lock picking. The easiest example I can think of is in Curse of the Azure Bonds, when you first visit the bar/gambling place in Zenthil Keep, upon exiting you can attempt to pick the pocket of a guard and get EXP if successful.
These occasions were rare compared to lock picking however. Traps were rare too.
