I don't think a lot of people consider chromatic orb and just automatically choose magic missle to keep memorized. At level 12, it automatically kills some oponents unless they save v/s spells. Found this quite usefull, especially against humans/deni-humans. The summon nisharuu/hakashar REALLY helps against mages. It can make them a lot easier.
For the most part, I keep spells that cancel defensive spells(breach, pierice magic, oracle, limied wish, spell thrust), a couple summoning spells, mind spells(choatic commands, donination), and some anti magic protection (spell turning, absorption, imunity) and mage protection(blur, impproved invisible, stoneskin, etc). I don't care much for area of effect offensive spells or any other that might hurt me. I'm a melee fighter party who likes to rush the enemy, so those spells usually end up damaging me.

Yea, I agree chromatic orb is very useful, specially when it stuns high level opponents. I think overall the spell I have been most impressed with is the priest spell earthquake, it is very fun to use. Incendiary cloud is also fun :)

Yeah? I just learned something about the chromatic orb. I never used this spell because I was thinking It was useless.

But I will try it, after the recommandations you just made.

[IMG] Well Chrom Orb is the best death spell I have to agree...that is if you are damn too lucky.Possible victims have a +6 saving throws bonus which makes the spell nearly(if not totally) useless.I couldn't make it work even for a single time in Torment(yes right from start to the end) and when I was unsuccessful for the first dozen tries in BG2, I had to change to mag. mis.

Flame Arrow is pretty potent at higher levels.

I use chromatic orb solely as my first level spell. I was really happy they included it ( it was my fav. PnP spell) and I have had amazing luck with it. Always seems to pound up some flesh for me. Can't save forever.

P.S. I think it was the most potent in IWD

I like Chromatic Orb, myself, but be careful not to use it against enemies that you want to loot after it starts petrifying. Save it for the trolls, and ogres and the like. You can also put it in a sequencer and make them save multiple times.

All in all, Chromatic Orb and Magic Missile are the most powerful 1st level spells.

For damaging an opponent I use magic mis. or flame a. , Breach is very very usefull and against those pesky Greater wolfweres I use Powerword: Stun (after damageing them) , Sequensers and lightningbolts at Dragons and True seeing at mages, and of course chain lightning is handy, but the best killer is IMHO finger of death (I don't use them anymore, they get the fun out of battles)

Abi-Dalzim's horrid wiltin (or sometihng like that)

    AWESOME =)

my mage and imoen dishing these out, can render any enemy party. Even the battle with irenicus ind the end, 2-3 of these and all the demons go down.
and with items that give -5 to spellcasting time(only on my own mage), they can be cast really fast

else I use breach, secret word, ruby ray, djinni summoning,

I usually only use magic missiles against dragons and other powerfull enemies, to lazy to cast 'em when the fighters can handle it as well =)

the chromatic orb stun effect i think is cooler than the death thing, because (not sure though) the save throw is harder. A save at +4 or +6 against death isn't that hard, when your wiz reach high levels.

finger of death against umberhulks work really nice as well

Course you can talk about all these high level spells. But they aren't as usefull as the others because you can't memorize as many.(ok for a sorcerer they are but thats diff) If you wanted to talk about all them high level spells then timestop and imprisonment would rule supreme.

Death spell and cloud kills work much better against umberhulks and other such monsters.

The spells i think are best would be mordakiens sword, stoneskin, chromatic orb, and project image/similacrum

    Identify spells
All spells can be made efficient. Just play them with creativeness. I tried to play a mage whom I disallowed using all the popular spells.
Grease was amazingly quite nice :)

I really like all the death spells they such a cosy power feeling but the most useful is with no doubt abi-dalzims horrid wilting.
Time stop is also nice but is a lvl 9 spell so you dont use it that much

It gives You a far better attack role at nighttime or in dark dungeons. If You are a human that is.
But I agree its not as usefull in the BG-series as in P&P where seeing in the dark can be a lifesaver.

What about Holy/Unholy Smite? When my party is getting attacked on all sides I can just center one of those babies right on my party and laugh as all the bad guys get slapped around by the FORCE OF GOD as my good-aligned party laughs along beside me.
