I need some sugestions for a new character to start over with. I would like sugestions on just about everything like the race, class, stats, profinciencies and stuff like that. I would like a good roleplaying charater over a character made just for power. I also was wondering if a sorcerer or a mage is better.

I kinda depends on what scrolls you find in the game. Sorcerer has freedom to choose what spells (s)he learns, wizard has to find them, BUT a specialized wizard has more spells (he does right?). If you really want to be able to cast mordenkainen's sword or any other particular spell you better choose sorcerer. I played two games not finding the scroll, and now I found two.
Also sorcerer doesn't have to know out front which spells he'll be casting. It spares you time in the spell book thinking what spells to memorize for this enemy, and is thereby more efficient too. Suddenly want to cast 4 lower resistance? No problemo

[IMG] Think who you are and make that as a charecter then try to play through it as you would.

That might make an intresting role play.

And remember the most powerful character is not the most fun to play.

I personally like elven Sorcerers; you could also try a half-elven Ranger/Cleric. Remember, it's not the powergaming that can make a character faceless. And only YOU can give them a character and roleplay them, no matter the strength of the character. Good luck.

Try to use some weapons you have never played before... Maybe Halberd if you never played with that weapon (for example)

Just choose a nice class, don't know what you already played... be a bit creative.

To further extend the roleplaying experience you can try and base your party around a theme. For example, if you choose to play a Chaotic Neutral lunatic spreading his unique brand of benign mayhem across the realms, then go for characters who are similarly unhinged, such as Minsc, Jan and the perennial psycho-in-our-midst Korgan. You could create a ranger character and make up a party of tree lovers like Jaheira, Cernd, Valygar etc (Just make sure you stock up on the restoration scrolls when you go hunting the pointy toothed nocturnal ones ;) ). Anyway, its just an idea. Good luck with whatever you decide to do.

I agree to headbanger - for a change (after my halfling cavalier) I played an archer and I made him use longbows, bastard swords and spears - two weapons I rarely used before.

Since he was so good in ranged weapon combat I now decided it was time for me to try a halfling kensai in my new game - the total opposite.

    *gnome-preaching mode ON*

Try a gnome multiclass of some sort, and give him/her weapons you haven't used before, or weapons that's unusual for the class. The stats doesn't matter very much.

    For example: Gnome
    Fighter/Illusionist
    Chaotic Neutral

    Str:15 Dex:18 Con:10 Int:19 Wis:10 Cha:15

    Uses: Two-handed Swords and Longbows

    Something like that. :)

I agree with Will's idea, it can be a good roleplaying experience. You can make for example a holy-warrior team. The protagonist can be some paladin kit, you can have Anomen, Aerie,Mazzy and maybe Keldorn in your party.

[IMG] I have an Idea! Try a completely elven female archery team. Do all elf female archers. that sounds interesting huh? Or maybe a Wizards anonymous team (all wizard slayers) or maybe All Half-Orc Barbarians. Just try a kit/class you've never really focused on using before and make your whole party follow that Class and/or race.

By the way: Sorcerers are better but mages are more challenging. Especially an abjurer.

Ok two of my favourite characters:

    1. Half-elf Fighter/Thief Profs in Longsword (due to the lack of a rapier:( ) and either two-weapon style and dagger (or short sword whatever your preference) or single-weapon style and a bow. Works wonders for me.

    2. A Sorcerer of any race you want (i prefer Half-elf, but thats because i think thats the coolest race). Profs in quarterstaves and slings. A very potent spellcaster.

I agreed with lasko. Don’t play a class or kit already involved in the game. If you want to know what are the npc, you can see them here, in sorcerers. About your stats, depending on your class or kit, but try to go over 90, preferably 92-94 total of all your stats. If you go for a mage, read some about spells, in order of choosing the best spells for him/her, and not start memorizing not useful spells. Read about the races special attributes, to have the best choice for the class. For example, a Half-Orc (19 str, 19 con) is excellent for a barbarian. An elf is great for a archer the high dex scores, and the bonus to bows. So, imho, first choose what you want, an special race, or class. If you go for race, then look for the best kit for that race. If you go for class, then later choose the best race for that class or kit. Once you have that, go for the static’s (remember, above 90 at least) and then the specializations. Once you have your character, you can choose your party, to have some balance. If you want balance, get two fighters, one mage, one priest, one thief, and another of your choice. That is what you need. Depending on your character, is your party. If is the first time you play BGII, don’t suggest to go solo, or have a non mixed party, with only warriors or things like that. This is extremely fun, but for first time, to tough.

You don't have to go over 90 stats m8. If you have a thief he only needs dex 19 strength 12, and con 16. The other stats hardly matter. Of course if you really want to be superman 90 stats is a must ;)

Well, may be you are right. Perhaps for a mage or a thief some 84 is ok, is not going to be a front line fighter.

In any case, there's plenty of items to boost weak stats. I'm sure there's a list around here somewhere. (:hmm: BG Encyclopedia perhaps?)

High stats are by no means necessary to enjoy the game. First time I played BG1, my elven ranger had:

    Str:15 Dex:14 Con:17 Int:14 Wis:18 Cha:12

OK, this might be a fairly good total, but poorly placed in terms of *power*. Nevertheless, I really enjoyed the game.

Another good example is my nasty gnome:

    Str:18/88 Dex:16 Con:8 Int:19 Wis:8 Cha:5

I have played many times with great stats as well, but those without were the games I enjoyed the most.
