Is it possible to beat Undead Solaufein without using cheese?

My favorite kind is going upstairs until his spells run out, or keeping the party back while the PC casts Spell Immunity: Divination and Invisibilty to wait it out.

    I've never legitimately beat him.

From this point on, using any ToB abilites, spells or otherwise is considered cheese as well because they shouldn't exist as this is the SoA forum

Yes. To kill him legit, you either have to beat him at his own game - grand-scale buffing + offensive spells and godly melee abilities, or study his strategy a bit and come up with a counter-strategy of your own.
Unfortunately, few classes and kits can clash against both the F/M's buffing and spellcasting abilities - and Sol has more than a few innates to help him around.

[IMG] *shakes head* I really don't know how even a high level F/M would beef to his level. He would easily dispel anything you put up with his high casting level Remove Magic. Keldorn couldn't touch him because it seems he's got unlimited spell shields and Spell Immunity: Divination. He's got True Seeing, godly Level Drain, a double strength Haste spell (I think) and not to mention a legion of Revenge Spiders.

Even if you manage to get him to just Stoneskin you're probably so Near Death that if he blows in your general direction you'll die.

His MR is probably 100, but I don't know.

Actually, short of his MR and Dimension Door Sola is just an F/M in the full regalia of buffs. ;)
The Mod-maker said and proved so.
He's actually more powerful when he's not Undead.

But now that you mention it, I shudder at what undead Haer Dalis would be like.

But Imagine a solo full level Kensai/Mage with amulet of power and Robe of Vecna with lots of GWW's and CS's fully beefed up casting [snip] against a full level Blade  If that does not count as cheese then I assure you that nothing does and I can testify that.

Hell if you really want cheese play a multiplayer game with a Sorcerer, Blade and K/M and then try telling me you do not shudder at how powerful that combination would be. most likely easy as pie and boring as hell I wager :)

But if Haer Dalis is a Tiefling then what would happen if he was an Undead Tiefling?
and as for an Undead Haer, well... hell yeah i agree completly.

But getting back on topic I managed to beat him just barley with my archer, kelsey, keldorn, anomen and imoen. By running out of the area resting and coming back to pound on him, cheesy yes but for the love of Bhaal I was playing on INSANE, which is a good indication of the type of person I am... or not. I managed to keep the spiders away with skeletons, not the warriors the low level ones, long enough to kill Sola while he was busy with Drizzt. for the spiders I used my summons along with my dual wielding Archer who was loaded to the max with items to boost saving throws vs spells, Unfortunatly (or fortuanatly?) Solaufein ended up killing poor Drizzt during his second wind :)

    Mystra,
Put on Spell Immunity:Abjuration. His remove magic won't be able to touch you. Remember that neither dispel nor remove magic affects the high level buffs.

I've never been able to beat him either, but from looking at his script, I can tell you what he does.

He does not use spell shield, at all. He uses Spell Immunity:Abjuration and Spell Immunity:Divination. He then casts Improved Invis. This alone makes for a nasty combination as his Invis cannot be dispelled, meaning that you can't zap his immunity to dispels. Ruby Ray of Reversal will work, assuming that you can get him visible. He drains 5 levels per hit, so you'll need negative plane protection on as many chars as possible.

According to Userunfriendly's cheese guide, hitting him with a Protection from Magic scroll before he buffs himself will stop the buffs from working. He still did buff himself when I tried that, though. Maybe you'll have better luck, though.

@Drust: He's a part of Weimer's Solaufein Mod. You haven't met him because it's a mod, which you evidently don't have.

When I beat him this last time I was playing with a 9/17 Berserker/Cleric. Sure, it'd be pretty easy to waste him if you had a F/M, but that's what Sola is, so why have two? Anyway, what I ended up having to do is cast Limited Wish to get Negative Plane Prot. It probably took me at least 3 minutes to cast all the buffs on my guys - from longest lasting to shortest. I was succesful in turning most of the Vampires when I went in to the room, so Drizzt and Arkanis didn't have to deal with them, only Bodhi and the Revenge Spiders.

With Negative Plane Prot. on all my guys I could rotate them to absorb his attacks. My Berserker/Cleric, I think, had 3 Heal spells and Aerie had 1 or 2, so I could sort of switch from Keldorn to Minsc to my PC until his buffs wore off. When all, or most, of his buffs wore off, I hit him with two Lower Resistance, than I hasted my guys again and cast Power Word: Stun from Imoen once he was down a few HP.

Anyway... long story short, most of my guys were level drained, they were all fatigued, I basically had no spells left, and I still had to fight Bodhi!

Luckily my PC had the Flail of Ages and walked in there with Draw Upon Holy Might on and hit her until she was slowed, then I switched to MoD+1 and continued to beat her down, and when she started moving normal again I switched to the FoA and slowed her again... etc, etc, etc.

    @casey...

A Kensai/Mage can't wear the Robe of Vecna.

Yes he can. Ive beaten undead sola with very few chars. A solo sorcerer which no one wants to hear about. An inquisitor, an archer.

The inquisitor fight was all npcs really, he just wacked at sola and had 100% magic res to help him out. He still got a bit beat up but tanked like a monster. Sola ported to hit my other party members often but i just ran them away from him, we were all hasted and i made sure to cast defensive harmony so it lasted at all times. Viccy turned all the vamps and they distracted the spiders. I put bhodi outta commision rather easily and waited till solas protection:div and ab ran out. Bhodi is never particularly hard, even with all her cool powers in tactics.

For the archer I used called shot on bhodi and as many revenge spiders as possible. I also had whirlwind so i pretty much ****ed up every thing in the room (an archer never misses a shot, Im pretty sure by chp 6 i had 0 thaco with him.) Next annoying man burst a bunch of vamps and we all slammed into bhodi. I had no tanks this time so I just used a bunch of skeleton warriors and mordains swords, with a wand of monster summoning to hold him off. (Wand is important since he casts death). His protections ran off and he was cake.

Basically to win this fight your gonna want a high level cleric. You should have one for that matter at this point.

In case your wondering about solo I just projected image, wizard eye and ran into the room summoning 7 [snip] in a time stop before just unleashing wave after wave of destruction. It was pathetically easy. (I spelled my regular sorc with pro:div and ab and improved invis, just like sola, heh).

Semi solo sorc anyway, i took sola cause i like his character and I wanted to fight him for exp.

I'm sure a Kensai mage can wear the Robe of Vecna I tried it before and he can.
But this was a long time ago and I might have been using some mods at the time I cannot remember I'll check later and find out for sure.

    @ Strifestrike

An Inquisitor with 100% MR? With all the Items I used Including the ring of Gaxx Kaliguns Amulet Carsomyr and the 10% extra MR at the end of SoA I only got up to 80% what did you do to get 100%?

EDIT: BTW I mean 100% MR without potions or scrolls to help you, only Items that will not wear off. In ToB [snip].

You can dispel Sola's immunities with a Chain Contingency which can target even invisible enemies.

As soon as he shows up and he is the only enemy (or the closest) cast CC and put in 3x Ruby Ray of Reversal, enemy sighted, closest enemy.
(hopefully you have a sorcerer or a high level mage)

Then when CC goes off, you can True Sight and use 3x Lower Resistance (best in Spell Trigger) and preferably followed with Doom + Greater Malison.

If you happen to own Staff of The Magi or Carsomyr - whack him a couple of times. ;)

You can blast him with spells now. :D

Or hit him with Mod +2 - he is undead, remember ?
If he doesn't make his save, he is toasted. :D

[IMG] Several people in this thread, though apparently good writers, can't read. This is the description of this forum, listed in the top of this forum's thread list sticky, and forum description on the board front page:

"For posts concerning the second part of the Baldur's Gate saga without the expansion installed. (Check out our BGII Solution). Posting anything ToB-related is not allowed in this forum. Any unofficial modifications to the game (mods) should also be discussed here."

I believe that is more than clear enough. I've had to edit out a dozen ToB references from various posts in here. The next person who posts any ToB spoilers in this SoA-only forum will get his whole post deleted, and 50 posts removed from the post count. Don't make unnecessary work for me. If the forum description says SoA ONLY, that means NO MENTION of ToB. ToB does not exist here. People who post in this forum do not have ToB. To them, any ToB material posted here is a spoiler, and irrelevant.

We have another forum where both SoA and ToB material goes, so post there only if you have ToB installed, as per the forum description:

    http://www.sorcerers.net/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=forum;f=10

"For posts concerning Baldur's Gate II with the Throne of Bhaal expansion installed. You must post here even if you are playing only the SoA part of the game. Any unofficial modifications to the game (mods) should also be discussed here."

Awww cheer up Tal it's not as if anyone will know what that is without actually buying ToB first :D

[I see you're not taking this seriously, so the next ToB spoiler you make in this forum will get you the IoTW plaque alongside the other consequences listed above.] -Tal

@ Casey, I used spells to get him up that far. I used protection from magic energy which spells against magic damage such as abi or mm. Dispel magic is a waste of time on sola unfortunately, or fortunately since I didnt have to use and thus kept all my buffs. Caromsyr, gaxx, 1 rings, an amulet and a modded armor. Dont remember from what mod though, sorry. Anyway after all this my MR is usually 80-90 which is pretty good. With spell im fine against magical assaults.

    Sorry tal, [snip]

[Sometimes the medicine is the same thing as the disease. Coupled with Tal's direction, this also amounts to a spoiler. Tal, for what it's worth, this was part of an apology.] - Beren

Recently, I went through Undead Sola again with a solo Blade, Sorcerer and a party with a PC Archer.

The Sorcerer fared best, followed closely by the Blade. (SoA. Had to reload a dozen times before the I got my Blade to outbuff him. After that, the Blade whipped through the whole battle easier than Sorcerer, but the Sorcerer got them all on the second try.)

The party was a wreck - right on the first try, but three fatalities, leaving Minsc, PC and Keldorn.
