Seriously, how many times have you guys played the whole game through? with new heroes...

I'm at the end of my first game and I am already wondering about playing again with a new character and all new party members.... but how much will the game change? the plot will be the same right?

I know there will be different romances(mine got cut short when my love died early on) different quests and different paths and alignments... but how much is the same? Is the second time 50% as much fun? 4th time 20% as much? How much fun can a solo be?

Pretty close to 15 times, using a similar party every time.

Probably a dozen times with various iterations. Soloing can be fun in the beginning, but, usually, you're unstoppable halfway through the game.

There's a big dropoff after the first time you play, but, obviously, there's great replayability here. Try evil. Try NPC's you wouldn't give a second look to. Invent roleplaying concepts like a misogynist who won't take any female NPC's (or the opposite, which may be harder -- shudder, Nalia and Imoen and Aerie in the same party with Viccy and Mazzy). Play a paranoid hero who will only associate with NPC's from the first game. You get the picture.

Once that gets boring, it's time for the mods.

DMC, I'm with you on the mods -- wish I had the skill to install them! I've played thorugh about 8 times now, with all sorts of variations. Sometimes, I get bored with SoA.

LKD - if you are skilled enough to post on this message board, you are skilled enough to install the mods. Go to Weimer's site and just carefully follow the instructions. It's like baking a cake. Don't add the eggs until it says to do so.

Never tried the mods myself, think i'll have a go.

Oh yeah, if you get bored of the game than you have probably played more than all the people that have posted on this topic together (4 people, excluding you) ;)

@Spoogemonkey: The plot really depends on your actions. If you played a "good" party this time through, you might want to try an "evil" party next time. You also might want to try soloing a single character.

10-20. Though only around maybe 8 times have I played completely through. Usually I just play until I beat Bodhi for the second (and final) time or something, for testing.

I think I have finished BG2 about 50 times or so.
My friends all think I´m crazy when they see me create yet another Character =)

Maybe I am retarded, but there aint no game ever made that can compare with BG2. I have just as much fun now as I had the first time.

And the game can change alot depending on how and what you play. And when you´ve played it enough to be able to tell exactly what you need to do to complete it you can always time it and try to get better and better times =)

Wow! FIFTY TIMES! My friends think I'M OBSESSIVE, but I'm still on my first game!

It really is a comfort to know that there are folks out there that are WAAAAAAAY more obsessive than I am...... does that make me O.K.?

Next related question - should I play BG2 again or go straight to TOB? note: I played BG1 3 times even though I already owned BG2... and, really, how do the sequels compare to BG2?

Heh, I've played SoA through only twice and I'm not very interested in it anymore (although I still play online sometimes). Maybe I should try some new mods.

    "Does that make me okay?"

Ofcourse, I consider myself to be okay and that´s what matters really =)

    Keep playing dude.

[IMG] WHAT??!!? You played BG2 50 times.... and you played BG1 MORE THAN THAT!?????

Yow, dude, I take it you don't get out much...

Do you play online in groups or by yourself?

and you already have TOB, but you can't bring yourself to leave BG2....?? dude, I promise Jaheira won't hate you for being unfaithful! It's O.K. Minsc and Boo will always be there for you.... and there are many more sequels to enjoy...

Maybe you should form/join a D&D pen&paper group... it might be a half-way house for you....something a little more social... because, you know, ...you worry me......really...

See, my problem is, I get wishy washy. I've played the game several times, but only finished it once. I still have yet to finish the expansion. I'll get so far and think, "wouldn't it be cool if I went through with a different character?" and then I start a new game. I've started tons of these. I absolutely cannot settle on one single game. It's like I'm obsessed with playing the PERFECT BG2 game, and I won't stop until I've done it.

It pains me to say this, but BG2 offers so many options and so many different ways to play, especially with the new mods, that I don't EVER think I'll finish it again. Seriously...I'm in a state of BG2 Limbo. I want to play all the time, but I'm never satisfied with the way the game is going, though it is tons of fun.

Come to think of it...I'm pretty much insane now. I am not kidding - it's actually driving me nuts. Help!!!! :(

I feel the exact same way. You want the perfect character, but as you said, that wont happen. Altough my first character, a Cavalier, is probably the one I liked the most.

No need to worry spoogemonkey, I get my fair share of women and booze. So what more can you ask? Except for a better job...

Anyway Death Rabbit, any ideas for a perfect character? Do you have TDD installed? What I would want is a Fighter with magic resistance that could hide in shadows. I think a Drow would be most fitting for that. So you "Kit Creators" go ahead and make a Drow Fighter kit that gains stealth. Cuz I cant seem to figure out how to work the BG2 Kit Creator =(

I´m in the underdark, just about to enter the drow city. The spell is cast so to say. Guess what I did. Read a post and created a Dwarven Barbarian just to see if he could be cool. Thing is, he actually is kinda cool and when he gets Crom Faeyr and Frost Reaver things get even more interesting...

@ jizz gorilla (er, I mean spoogemonkey) :D

I said I've only FINISHED it once, I've played through the major areas enough times I know them in my sleep. But yes, I am a tool for it regardless. :rolling:

And, as per you're request: you are a monkey. There. :)

    @ Duke Eltan

The character I've had the best experience with is my first character I ever used...the plain old vanilla Ranger. They just seem to be my favorite. The perfect character IMO, or at least the only one it seems I will EVER be satisfied with would be a strong melee fighter who can use every weapon, cast mage, priest AND druid spells, backstab, use theiving skills...all while wearing the best platemail...and no restrictions. :hahaerr:

What does that mean exactly? I guess I just want too much out of my characters. My game suffers because I can't decide between 2 things: having the party I want, or having the best story. The NPC's don't provide what I want out of the game, so I therefore expect my PC to make up the difference. Ideally, I would rather create a party of my own adventurers that utilizes all my favorite aspects of the game, and combines the unique qualities of some of the more unique classes in the game (Monk, Barbarian, Archer, Sorcerer, etc).

However, I've come to realize that I personally enjoy having the NPC's for the more involving story, which translates, for me, into a funner game experience. But here's the rub: I HATE the NPC's in BG2 for the most part. I think they're lame and weak, and few are interesting to me at all.

    Hence, my limbo. :bang:

But to answer your question, I wish I knew what the perfect character was. Believe me, I do. Whenever I feel I have the perfect character, I play through and have fun...right up until the point I come across an item or ability that I really want, only to realize it's restricted to my class and/or current party. That drains the fun for me.

I'd say pick your favorite aspect: Kickin' ass (warrior), godlike power (magic user), deadly cunning (rogue) or divine power (priest). If there are two you like similarly well, pick a multi-class. If you heavily favor melee, but still want some spells, go Paladin or Ranger, or whatever. I wish I had a better answer...sorry!

As for TDD, I used to have it installed, and played through most of it (never finished it...surprised? :hahaerr: ) I found the quests to be poorly written and therefore lame, but at least it offers a much longer gaming experience. The kits were also badly done. They were either greatly overpowered or just plain stupid. I think the creator made all those kits just so he could say "HEY! I made 9,000 kits! I am a GENIUS!!"

I personally only used 2 of the classes (Priest of Mystra, Vampire Hunter) and played through with an all-created party of normal classes from SoA. I'd say the best reason to install TDD is all the experience you get from doing the extra quests. There are several cool items to find as well, but like I said, some are overpowered, and others (this pissed me off) were lame and I couldn't use them, yet when I tried to sell them, no store would take them! :grr:

Good god this is a long post. :o I hope that answered your questions...
