    Pit fiends will attack anyone in the area (because they're from Hell, and they're annoyed with being summoned, and they're just like that).
    You need Protection From Evil 10'R to keep them from attacking your party; if there's another way to keep them off you, I don't know it.
    Does anyone know what happens if one side summons a Pit Fiend and both sides have Protection From Evil 10'R cast? Does it just stand there doing nothing?

    The Pit Fiend is a real mean entity. It is an intellect, far above the mind controlling ability of humans or other races playable in AD&D.
    I mean it is too powerful to control. And it is very upset being summoned by a human. If the caster isn't protected from evil, he will be the demons first target.
    You cannot control this creature or other demons dragon903, sorry.

    Yes, he doesn't attack anyone...

    Also be careful not to summon two or more of these with protection casted - they'll possibly start fighthing each other.

    Just a very minor point. It doesn't need to be 'Protection From Evil 10'R' that you cast. You can of course cast the normal protection from evil on each member of your party in turn. Paladins (like Keldorn) usually have lots of these spells as an inate abaility.

    umm and this pit fiend will unsummon BEFORE protection from evil ends, riiight? I can see a bit of a problem with it otherwise :) I haven't dared to use those demon summoning spells yet, I prefer the good old trusty fire elementals :)

    On his way to clean evil creatures (like dragons and demons) from the face of faerun Sir Donaldus used every demon summoning scroll he found.

    He casted protection from evil and let the party mage summon a demon. Then he attacked and killed the demon ... an easy, funny and enjoyable method to gain xp ;)

    My tactic.
    Open door, Summon Pit Fiend, Close door, Run like hell :D

    And by the way, you could also loose control of elementals, it happened to my quite often...

    [IMG] My tactic:

    1. cast protection from evil 10 feet radius on your party;

    2. Summon pit Fiend;

    3. step aside and let the Pit Fiend finish all opposition;

    4. come back, finish that beast and get +16000 exp. points;

    you just attack it when you're protected from evil. It wont strike back. You can also memorize as many demon summoning spells as possible and kill them all for very game exploiting XP.

    Elementals summoned by mages have a chance of turning on the mage that summond them (IIRC it's 15%).
    OTOH, the fire elemental summoned by druids (priests also? not sure) never turn on the party. Which is why I get Jaheira to summon fire elementals.

    protection from evil, protection crom evil ... searching my manual ... I knew something was wrong: Protection from evil just gives you a +2 saving throw bonus and your enemy receives a -2 malus on all his rolls IIRC. Of course he will strike back <shakehead> a strange idea that a lvl-1 spell could disable an enemy right from the nine hells, leaving him defenseless <shakehead> oh well, there is a nice mace of Jerrod iirc at one of the traxder that gives +5 damage on demons, however, for me +4 damage weaopons (Namarra, Flail of the Ages, Skullcrusher etc.) always worked satisfactory.

    When summoning a demon the effect of protection from evil is just that it doesn´t attack *you* ;) but this doens´t makes him less hostile.

    Anyone else notice that you don't get XP from whatever the pit fiend kills? Whenever I summon one, It'll cleam house alright, but I don't collect any of the XP from what it takes out.

    [IMG] I can't see where the problem is?

    So what if you didn't get XP for something. If you do all quests available and NOT cheat you won't need that XP anyway - you'll reach the Cap much before the final fight.

    [IMG] There is a very simple reason :D GREED :D

    *I* want to get all the xp for myself! And that´s why never play through the game summoning monsters and demons to do the killing for me (except if I would play an evil conjurer). That´s why summonming IMHO sucks :) - I prefer to crush my enemies in melee or with honest straight combat magic! MUAHUAHUAHUA :mad:

    :D Schnapszahl ! Cheers ! :D

    Let me get this streight. Your deamon kills someone and you wanna get the XP. That's not gonna happen :).
    Anyway you also shouldn't have got XP when summoning genies or elementals, but since they are a part of your party the XP is shared. The demon is not a part of your party. He is hostile.

    I havn't been on the boards for a while, but I'll try to answer as much as I can.

    Summoned creatures generally don't last long. I basically use them to take attacks away from my party, or to gently nibble away hp, not to kill. They're distractions, nothing more.

    Ok, they'd kill kobolds and goblins no problem, and all other lesser creatures, and some of the tougher ones, but they're easily killed anyways, so why would you need the help of an elemental or whatever?

    I also think that summoning a pitfiend to get the exp is not cheating. For example, a real party is just about to enter a new dungeon. They havn't fought for a while, so they summon a demon for practise.

    [IMG] *sigh*

    I said "NOT cheat" in my reply above only to point out that he don't need all of XP because of XP cap.
    Am I clear now?
