Just out of curiosity, what character classes do you people use?

First time through the game I had an Undead Hunter, this time I'm using a fighter/mage.

Just wondering if there's a particular trend, although there's a lot to choose from.

I've always been a big Ranger fan, myself. My first 2 times through I had just a vanilla Ranger and had a blast. My new favorite is the Ranger/Cleric. Great as a tank, can turn undead, hide in shadows, and cast both druid and cleric spells from the outset. Plus, I love to dual-wield and Rangers are built for it. Rangers have several stat requirements, so I always seem to get excellent stat rolls with them (well above 90's). Gnomish illusionist/thieves run a close second.

[IMG] I play a mix of most classes - but always play single class - no multis or duals for me!

It depends on my mood. I like Rangers, I like Mages. I've played through with just about every class you could imagine, though I never dual class and rarely multiclass (if I do multi, I go for three classes and use my PC as a support character for the other guys who do the real work.)

Ranger/Cleric, I played it through with one too. But there are shamlessly overpowered. I think they forgot about the possibility to make a druid/cleric through starting as a ranger and then switch to cleric. That's a mistake. The Ranger/Cleric needs serious depowerement. A cleric wasn't meant to have all the druid spells at his disposal. Full armour plus Steelskin (?), plus fighter skills of a ranger plus cleric self-empowerment-as-fighter spells, like draw upon holy might, that's nearly cheating. :D ;)

I'm playing now a fighter, simple, which is double-wielding scimitars (I wonder how that's going to turn out). Before, I had a two axes-wielding ranger, which was great fun.

My current character is an Elven Enchanter named Lorinil. Ok...I know...name is lame...but the class rules! Enchanters cannot cast any evo/ivo spells. He is sort of what I always imagined a good elf wizard to be. He's not flinging explosions around or blasting things out of existence....that's such a human thing to do. He'd rather use subtlety and grace. and feeblemind...great spell. Only thing I am worried about is the lack of the contingency and spell sequencer lines...ah well

the trade off is worth it

Rangers all the way. Multi or Dueled what ever.
It's certainly not the best class ever,i just feel like its closest to what I would be if I lived in Forgotten Relms.

Personally have a thing for the Paladin. Played the Inquisitor on my first run through and sliced and diced. They seem slightly overpowered once they get the Holy Avenger, but who cares, honor and righteousness prevails.

I also have a thing for dualed mages. Added hit points is never a bad thing.

First time I finished the game was with a berserker, but the class I like most is probably the sorcerer because he can cast sooo many spells. I've always liked the bard classes as well. The ones I dislike most are probably the druid class.

I loves the kensai and finished the game five times with one.

It was also what I did for my first party. A dwarf kensai with pretty bad stats and all.

[IMG] I am playing a generic halfling cleric named ....Spoogemonkey! He tops out HP in the 40s, isn't very strong, nor particularly good at anything... but he can Raise Dead - who's Kensai can do that?

Rangers and Kensai are for power players that don't like to ever lose a fight.

Best way to pick a class - look at the NPCs and decide which one you DON'T want to be in your party... and be THAT class. In my case, I thought Anomen was a Tool... Minsc is waaaay cool - so don't be a Ranger. Keldorn is great etc. Imoen disappears for too long for my tastes... so a thief might be fun... Jaheira and Cernd are sufficient for druids, so don't be that class. Bards are versatle, but weak ... and there are interesting specialties that are not available in an NPC. Likewise, there are no good aligned single class mages.... but fighter/mages are overpowered. I suggest a single class for your first time through...

Stick to the topic please. Oh, and I always play a Ranger if I have the choice.

[IMG] My name probably says enough too. Thieves all the way. Not only do the kits rock, even the pure class have everything you need to kill almost every enemy. With the right items you can't be stopped  ! Well, that's almost true.

[IMG] Spoogemonkey - Rangers and Kensai are not just for people who don't want to lose a fight. I play with Rangers fairly oten. Not because I don't want to lose but because it's often a class best associated with my character and I think it's fairly balanced.

I play thief a lot in BG2 because I don't have confidence in the NPC thieves. (Everytime I use Yoshimo, lock pick fails  Jan's better, but I've used him too much already - want to explore other NPC's)

But in general, I'd go with a cleric. They were soo cool in the older Forgotten Realms games, which is why I picked one in my first run through the game. They've been powered down a bit now, but still like them.

Lately I have been very fond of mc fighter/assassins, brilliant class. Give him a good katana and a good shortsword and it is slice and dice time! :D

Backstabs with a poisoned blade are oh so sweet, especially on mages.
